Questo romanzo breve, "The Touchstone" fu pubblicato nel 1900, primo dei suoi romanzi. Si parla di un amore non ricambiato che viene venduto per denaro (le sue lettere, almeno): ma il successo sociale che il denaro porta è solo una mano di vernice che non riesce a tacitare la coscienza del protagonista, che, infine, lo porterà ad una nuova consapevolezza.
