Summary

Sicilia, 1926. Vincenzina Sparviero è la figlia attraente ma fragile di una famiglia di nobili siciliani, una ragazza, si dice in paese, troppo cagionevole per diventare madre. Ma della sua presunta sterilità al vecchio don Ottavio Licata non sembra importare granché, e così il matrimonio d'interesse fra la "palombella" mansueta e obbediente e il ricco sessantenne, fascista e mafioso, è combinato.

Un pomeriggio di primavera, però, quando il fidanzamento è stato ormai annunciato, improvvisamente Vincenzina incontra l'amore negli occhi ambrati di Filippo Gonzales. Da quel momento la ragazza si difende dal futuro che incombe imbastendo nella fantasia le immagini di una gioia impossibile: seduta alla finestra della sua stanza a ricamare e sognare, attende il passaggio della sagoma amata con il passo lento, le mani in tasca, uno sguardo fuggevole verso di lei.

Nella china lenta e inesorabile che conduce, sul filo della tragedia, al matrimonio annunciato, assaporiamo la storia struggente di un amore probabilmente impossibile.
