About this listen
Owen Ithell’s sense of self is rooted in his long, vivid visits to his grandparents’ small farm in the Welsh hills. As an adult, he moves away from the country and meets Mel, with whom he has children. He believes he has found happiness. But following a car accident, in which his daughter is killed and he loses a hand, the course of his life is changed forever. In his despair, he resolves to reconnect with both his past and the natural world. Abducting his children, he embarks on a long, fateful journey, walking to the Welsh borders of his childhood. In his confusion, his journey is a grasping at some kind of an understanding of his loss.

Well performed narration of a h we heavy story!
Very very well narrated. A poignant story with lots of layers and well crafted. Ultimately the whole story does have a depressing nature about it I would say, but at the same time reflects some realities of real life and relationships. The sense of the ‘Land’ and belonging to the land we live in, grow up in, the community spirit, was powerful, though for myself I have travelled to so many countries that the sense of dwelling in one place and becoming immersed in it, doesn’t interest me so much. Some of the descriptive detail was very good. The author definitely knows his birds. I’m a birdwatcher myself and there was lots of very clear descriptions of birds’ plumage and calls but listening to these descriptions came across as very boring to me; I think birdwatching is a very individual interest which can’t be conveyed on paper somehow. The powerful narration of the story definitely helped build up the different emphasis on themes throughout the story. I was recommended this book by someone who had studied it for A-level many years ago. It has a lot of deep meaning and it leaves a lot of thoughts going through your mind. Not an uplifting book by any means but definitely worth the read.

Disappointing
This came as a disapointment to me, as a Tim Pears fan, a key aspect of the book was rather confusingly (to me at least) revealed quite late in the book, but not in any clear context, so had some difficulty getting into the narrative because of this.
