About this listen

A mother's inspiring story of learning to live with bipolar disorder

Three months after the birth of her third child, Lisa experienced her first manic episode. It was only the beginning. As Lisa slowly unravels, her husband, Zachariah, is there but cannot reach her. After being hospitalized and diagnosed with bipolar disorder, Lisa must learn to navigate life and motherhood with a mental illness, staying afloat with Zachariah's enduring love and support.

In Laughing and Crying Alone, we are offered a compelling account of the struggles associated with bipolar disorder. Alternately heartbreaking and uplifting, we follow Lisa through the laughter and the tears. Exploring Lisa's feelings of isolation, Laughing and Crying Alone provides compassion and validation to those with mental illness while shedding a much-needed light on mental health. And through it all, we see a wife and mother come to terms with the uncertainties of living with bipolar disorder and reemerge to embrace the new normal with confidence and ease.

Brave

I can’t count the number of times I have fancied myself a fiction author, only to stop writing it after a chapter or two. Writing a book is hard, and none of the ones I started were of such a personal nature.

I know Les in real life, and I didn’t know she struggled with mental illness. I had no idea what I was getting into when I started this book, but I was absolutely blown away by her bravery. She spoke very openly and honestly about how it felt to be manic. To be both aware enough to know that she was acting was out of character but also helpless to change her behavior. It is estimated 1 in 100 people struggle with bipolar disorder. I can only hope that her story helps to bring comfort to someone just starting their journey.
