Summary

Lavender Road boasts a pawnbroker, a pub, two rows of terraced working class homes and, at one end, the big house owned by the local brewer. When war breaks out, the lives and fortunes of the families who live in Lavender Road are changed out of all recognition.

For Joyce, it means a struggle to keep food on the family table; for Jen it may mean the end of her dream to become an actress; and for Pam, there is the sickening seesaw of emotions as she fights attraction to her handsome lodger and a growing distance from a husband who is judged not fit to enlist.

Brilliant

I was sceptical about this 1st book and was pleasantly surprised by the story and characters within.
What spoilt it though was that the 6th book “Victory girls”was released 2018 before this and subsequent 4 books in 2020.
That said, I am thrilled with the stories surrounding the characters and find myself gripped unable to stop listening.
This series of lavender road reminds me of the Ellie Dean series and is very very good.
I mustn’t forget the perfect narrator Annie Aldington who brings each character to life with her amazing accents.
Helen Carey please write some more books in this series their brilliant

Wonderfully entertaining

I enjoyed this so much, it took me back to my childhood listening to stories of the home front during the war, told by my beloved Godmother and Aunty. The narrator was brilliant with her very convincing accents, switching easily between cockney, ‘Oxford English’ and foreign, male and female. Thank you for a terrific audible performance and great story!

Loved it.

Haven’t read this author before and I’m so fussy and never find a book that grabs me but this did. I love Annie Alderton too as she brings them all to life. On to the next one. Great read.
