About this listen

In the run up to 2016, I was a senior manager making what I now know were dozens of mistakes every day, but fixing them with effort and determination, and stress. It nearly killed me, but as my dad says, "experience is worth what it costs you", and that experience was worth a lot.

After I got out of hospital, I studied everything I could about projects, agile, design thinking, psychology. facilitation human behaviours, and anything else I thought would be useful to people like me. I figured out how to simplify things down and explain them to my team and stakeholders and went from being "just another" project manager working 60 hours a week, to becoming a leader in a major PLC with an empowered team who had amazing opportunities, buy-in and motivation.

After 3 years as a Chief Information Officer, coaching guiding my team to take on more and more responsibility (and get the promotions they deserved), I was able to manage my diary properly, and I went to a 4-day working week and started thinking about sharing the techniques more widely. 6 months later, I left that role and now I teach the biggest companies in Ireland how to simplify their projects and work efforts, empower their teams and generally reduce stress and achieve better outcomes all round. Many of the approaches and ideas are incredibly simple to learn and you can start using them immediately.

With stories and insights that will create several "ah-ha" moments, a lot of problems you'll recognise and even a few giggles, I hope you'll enjoy this as both entertainment and a learning experience. I guarantee that you'll take away many valuable ideas. If you don't - ping me on LinkedIn (I'm easy to find) and I'll give you double your money back.

Great style of story telling: the information is factual, vulnerable & the author builds a relatable narrative.

Although I do not have direct experience with project managing in a traditional sense, having worked with students in a classroom environment, I did find many of the pieces of advice very relevant and transferrable within educational institutions and other formal workspaces. Overall I found the audiobook very interesting. The book was structured effectively, taking the listener through the process of managing teams, the pitfalls and challenges of being a pm, how to leverage teams' innate strengths and abilities, safeguarding, and other strategies and techniques to facilitate an effective working environment.

Notable positives: great tone of voice, very easy to listen to. Great style of narration and story telling: the information isn't just factual, but the author also builds a very vulnerable and relatable narrative. The book discusses tips and tricks, suggests approaches and alternatives, and provides resources which can be used within company cpd sessions.

Quite an inspiration which was a surprise to me !

I got a lot from this audiobook, quite an inspiration which was a surprise to me given all the rather dry treatments of project management I have come across. I loved James’s handling of the material, he is clearly an expert in his field. There is wisdom here and an incisive genius in many of his simple, powerful analogies. It also gives a snapshot of the life of a successful executive for anyone thinking of taking that avenue.
His very frank life story was captivating and I enjoyed all his many other allegories that were regaled throughout. He brings his own insight and a fresh perspective to a challenging topic. I found the book gave me some useful tips for handling my own small projects like the relationship or lack thereof, between value and effort which makes a lot of sense. He really brings the topic to life and into today. Nice delivery.

Practical and Inspiring - A Must Read!

As someone fairly new to project management, "Leading Impactful Teams" by James Louttit felt like a friendly guide rather than a heavy textbook. The mix of relatable stories and anecdotes made the concepts easy to understand and even enjoyable to explore. I found myself taking stock of how I show up in not only my work but also my personal life. It’s like having an experienced mentor break down what truly matters in leading a team, making success feel not just possible but achievable without the usual stress.

Project Management 101

This is a reader-friendly book for anyone who has an interest in Project Management but is also completely new to it. James Louttit has presented here the key "lenses" (key aspects of a project) to consider to carry out a successful Project. He shares his lessons learned through experience and presents them in a very interesting fashion.

An exceptionally practical no-nonsense tool kit for both new and seasoned project managers.

Having seen James live in person, read the book, and now listened to the book, I cannot recommend Impactful Project Management enough!!

Listening to the audio book illuminated other techniques which hadn’t landed when I first read the printed version.

The tools and techniques James outlines for facilitating meetings captures the challenges and nuances of human interactions within project teams. He gives you techniques like the SAVE method, to arm you with navigating the daunting task of leading group discussions. Likewise, James shows the pitfalls to be aware of, perfect for more experienced managers who might be unaware of their own influence on group dynamics.

The lenses of project management which James gives the reader serve as an invaluable framework through which to look at the system of any project delivery.

Some business books run the risk of being dry and laborious to consume. However the energy in James’ narration and the humorous examples, so elegantly illustrated with representative pictures make the content a joy to listen and read.

I genuinely recommend this to everyone in the field of project management.

A satisfied customer, Lee

Great book even if you’re not a Project Manager!

James’ book gives a great insight into all aspects of leading teams, from the practical aspects of managing projects to avoiding the pitfalls that can create obstacles in completing them.

What I liked most about the book was the holistic and human approach James took, reminding me of the importance of communication, empathy and creating an impactful team striving for a successful project conclusion on time and within budget.

Highly recommend listening to the book on the go as James has an energetic and entertaining way of describing what is normally a very dry subject!
