General Sir Richard Dannatt
About this listen
As Chief of the General Staff, Sir Richard Dannatt was in overall command of the British army for the three years from 2006. This period saw some of the fiercest fighting yet in Afghanistan, and new and increased pressures and expectation placed on the army. From his very first day in the job, General Dannatt proved himself a courageous leader and a forceful advocate for the army, never shying from controversy to tell it as he found it.
Dannatt’s distinguished career in the army has spanned 38 years and seen him serve in many different theatres of conflict, from Northern Ireland (where he was awarded the Military Cross) to Bosnia and Kosovo, Iraq and Afghanistan. His experiences forged his unwavering loyalty to the fighting British soldier. More than any leader in recent times, Dannatt has used his position of command to argue for improved pay and conditions for British soldiers, a greater dialogue between the army and the country, the right equipment for the troops to do the job asked of them, and greater welfare and support back home for the wounded. His leadership has shaped the debate about the role of a modern army in modern warfare.
Leading from the Front is Richard Dannatt’s fascinating reflection on a life of military service and offers his characteristically frank analysis of whether Britain’s defence strategy is fit to respond to the threats we will face in the 21st century.

Good insight into Army High Command
A good enjoyable book with a great insight into some of the thought processes of a General within UK Military Command.
Enjoyable elements of Politics and how Government utilise Senior Chiefs to influence policy.
I'd recommend this book for anyone who's interested in the UK Armed Forces and how you can use your knowledge to influence your life outside of the military.

Honest and very interesting
I enjoyed Sir Richards honest and sometimes self critical accounts. He has made mistakes and holds his hands up but like a good leader finds ways to work the problem and resolve the issue.

Excellent insight
Apposite, revelatory, poignant and highly informative. Richard Dannatt is clearly a man of great principle and capable of the broader aspects of courage than the physical that his award of an MC early in his career would suggest. A must read!

Engaging and enlightening
The book has an honesty that was good to see, balancing his mistakes and accomplishments with humility. I was even more impressed that it was read by the General which added his personality to the book. A multitude of lessons for serving personnel and warning of history repeating itself.

Great insight into senior army leadership
Great insight into the life of a senior military leader. Not a “war” book, but one of leadership and politics

Interesting autobiography
Throws light on recent developments on the world stage and particularly on internal UK politics. The Westminster dimension was the most interesting.
