About this listen
Brought to you by Penguin.
Do you have what it takes to stand between us and the enemy?
"I’m here to prevent a major and imminent attack. One that will kill children. I’m alone and operational in the country where my colleague was taken and beheaded, and every hour I’m delayed is another hour for something to go wrong - for an informant to disclose my location, for the source I’m meeting to cancel, for the attack to go boom. The fear injects my thoughts with venom."
Amaryllis Fox was recruited by the CIA at the age of 21 in the aftermath of 9/11. After an intense training period – where she learns how to master a Glock, get out of flexicuffs while in the trunk of a car, withstand torture, and commit suicide in case of captivity – she is sent undercover to keep nuclear, biological and chemical weapons out of the hands of terror groups. Posing as an art dealer, she is sent on countless dangerous missions around the globe. Each time, the stakes become even higher and the risks more terrifying. Determined to stop the masterminds, Amaryllis’s quest will almost destroy her, until she realises that the only way to actually defeat the enemy is to have the courage to sit across from them… and listen.
In this explosive first-hand account – filled with suspense and plot twists to rival Carrie Mathison in Homeland – Life Undercover is an edgy story of an undercover CIA operative, hunting the world’s most dangerous terrorists, using deception and disguises and dead drops in the night in order to protect our streets.
Revealed in never-before-seen detail, Amaryllis offers compelling insight that can only come from having fought on the front lines.

Incredible story, absolutely loved it
This is one of my favourite books in a long long time. Amaryllis is raw, honest, interesting and a delight to listen to. Her narration is great, this had me hooked from the first chapter. It’s great to see such an in depth look at how these amazing people who protect and defend our countries deal with their everyday life and “job”. Thank you

Excellent, sags a tiny bit in the third quarter
Very interesting, from an early age almost schooled for a life of righting wrongs the authors transformation from front line to truth and reconciliation is fascinating.

Beautifully written that's why I rated it 4 stars, but don't expect too much espionage

Fascinating, Intriguing Amazing insight of the CIA
I have to admit, I am not really a Spy, Espionage, Covert Ops fan but got this on a whim after seeing the author on breakfast TV and was intrigued.
At first I thought it was all rather embarrassingly self conscious and overwritten in the chapters talking about the author's very unconventional childhood and I cringed a little, though was still very curious.
Then the whole thing took off and I was enthralled.
The intricate process of becoming a CIA covert operative enthralled and horrified me as I simply could not imagine being able to do such a job, living under cover, so much deception and so many high stakes.
I really admire the idea that homicidal extremists can be understood and disarmed and that we all have so much in common but find it hard to believe.
I love the message of hope and understanding in this book and I just hope it is true that fanatical terrorists can be reasoned with and have a lot in common with those they seek to blow up - I love the way that there are so many people giving their lives to stop terrorism but most of all I found the nuts and bolts of spycraft just so fascinating to hear about.
I am not, nor never could be a spy - but I am in awe of those who give their lives to protect the rest of us and in this case with such a compassionate and empathetic way,
Brilliant book, beautifully read and I will look forward to being swept off my feet again with a reread in the future.
Pure gold - thank you Amaryllis Fox for all you did to keep us all safe and for writing this enthralling book.

Wanted more
On completing this book I felt somewhat underwhelmed and wanting more in terms of both quantity and detail. Interesting enough but having seen ms fox interviewed I had expected more. What there was though I did enjoy.

Interesting account of a life some will never see
I was really taken by her account of the experiences and challenges faced. We only ever really hear or see the results of what's happened in the news, media or film. enjoyed it.
