About this listen
It's 1877 and Russian forces occupy the Pacific Northwest. They are advancing into California. New weapons have proven ineffective or dangerously unstable. The one man who can help has disappeared into Apache Country, hunting ghosts. A healer and a former sheriff lead a band into the heart of the invasion to determine what makes the Russian forces so unstoppable while a young inventor attempts to unleash the power of the lightning wolves.

A great continuation to a steampunk weird western.
If you liked the first book you will love this one it builds on the events in the first one adding more steampunk devices, conflict and moves the setting on with new steampunk creations and the havoc they can cause in the world. On its own, this book will be good but you will get much more out of it if have listened to the first book Owl Dance and had more of a chance to get to know the characters and their histories.
As with the first book, we get to see David Lee Summers’s interesting world and characters that will keep you listening until then end. The world feels authentic, very grounded in real history and reacts believability to the new inventions being added to it. The narration is great just as in the first book Edward Mittelstedt does a wonderful job breathing life into the words giving each character a unique voice and letting their emotions and personalities shine.
Having grown and developed in the first book the characters are more able and willing to go out and change their world. Everything is driven by the characters and their reaction to events nothing feels forced and the story is well paced.
Combined with the first book it creates a complete and interesting story. More things could happen after the events in this book but I feel it ends at a very satisfactory place in stories of both the world and the characters. I would highly recommend listening to both the first book and this one back to back to treat them as a single story. I still want to find out more about the owls but the mystery adds a little something the book.
I was very happy with the time I spent listening to this book and it is well worth a listen.
5/5 would recommend.

,A gripping yet whimsical tale of steam punk
Where does Lightning Wolves rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?
This book is the squeal to Owl Dance which is one of the best books I have read this year and this squeal did not disappoint in the least. This book was released about two months after the first book and it is my hope that the third will e coming soon .I very much want to follow our quirky characters that we have come to love and rout for over these last two books.
What did you like best about this story?
The book was brilliant but Edward Mittelstedt breathed life in to the story and helped create David Lee Summers' world and characters .He had me hooked and honestly I could probably listen to him read the phone book but luckily he had this fantastic world to bring to life instead. So I would say a resounding yes to the audiobook having a quality to it that cant be created on a page alone. The book was'nt that short but I found myself wanting more .More of the whimsy more of the steam punk peculiar characters and world. I really enjoyed listening to the powerhouse collaboration between the author and the narrator ,an epic pairing. It was a delicious morsel of YA fantasy.I wait with abated breath to listen to book 3 in the series..The creations ,the way that they have come it to society and the characters gradual acceptance builds on the superb foundation we got from book one. I recommend this for fans of the peculiar and quirky that steam punk brings to the table but also fans of YA and even fantasy I honestly cant see how it could disappoint.
Any additional comments?
