Summary

A powerful story of two families over three generations, from award-winning author Freya North.

In the 1960s, Florence, a pregnant 16-year-old, is banished to one of the remotest parts of the UK. Years later, Nell and Dougie are both at critical moments in their lives when their paths cross.

Sometimes who we are goes way beyond where we are from. What happened to Florence? Why is Dougie so reluctant to return home? How can Nell make peace with the lies she's been told?

As the lives of these three people collide and interweave, the search for truth uncovers long-kept secrets. Little Wing is a story about resilience, forgiveness and the true meaning of family, about finding one’s place in the world and discovering how we all belong somewhere and to someone.

Excellent storytelling.

I enjoyed every minute of this. The characters were loveable and realistic as was their dialogue. It was a very believable story. The presence of the island of Harris was like a wonderful extra character.
It gave the book a fascinating dimension. The length of the book gave the story and characters room to breathe. The performance was just right. I’m extremely glad I came across it and would highly recommend. It is a very whole and intelligent novel.

A simple story

This story left me underwhelmed and frustrated. There were some beautiful descriptions but the storyline was too simple and easy to guess at. I just didn’t believe that Wendy wouldn’t have let the secret out sooner. I didn’t understand why aunt m, a respected Cambridge professor, wouldn’t just explain to her adult niece what had happened. I didn’t understand why Nell didn’t go straight to the local registry office in Scotland or the local doctor or vicar for information. Why would she expect to find answers on a lonely beach rather than in the church where the whole community would be congregated? It also seemed bizarre that nobody in the community, who supposedly loved Flora so much, checked regularly on a 17 year old mother and her baby living in such a remote area. Perhaps Frank, the chaffinches, Ian and other characters could have been developed more with less focus on Nell and Dougie. These were more interesting characters who might have explained or developed the story better. I had to finish the book because I was listening to it for Bookclub. Thankfully I thought to put it on 1.7 speed to hurry it along. The narrator had a beautiful, clear voice but read too slowly for me.

Beautiful prose

A beautifully written novel full of warm likeable characters. Narration was perfect. The story was engaging if a little plodding at times.

This will always live in my heart rent free!

I read my first Freya North book at the age of 17.
Over the 20 years that have followed, I have read each and every other of Freya's 14 books, more than once.
I have always found a certain happiness and inner peace when reading Freyas books and have revelled in the pages,  sharing them with my mum and sister who are also avid Freya fans.
I eagerly awaited Little Wing and had my pre order in as soon as it was available.
I received my hard back through the post but ended up listening to it on audible as it works so well with my busy schedule.

Sophia Engstrand did a fantastic job of narrating and has such a soothing and calming voice.

From the very first chapter, I felt as though I was being hugged by an old friend.
Freya's writing style, although refined over the years, is unmistakable to me.

Little Wing is such a beautiful story. It's filled with sadness tinged with plenty of joy and that feeling that fills your heart.

Freya describes the Outter Hebrides in such a way, that I feel as though I've been there, and it's left its mark on my heart.

The characters are surely living, breathing people, because I met them the day I started reading, and they will stay with me for life.

I hung on as long as I could before listening to the epilogue because I couldn't bear for it to be over.
I would happily spend the rest of my days following Nell, Flora and Douggie through theirs.

To summarise, I would highly recommend this beautiful story to anyone. I really mean anyone.
If you haven't read this book, you are missing out.

Now to go book my flight to Harris!

Like a big hug

This was a beautiful book. A little slow moving but wonderful prose and warm characters that bring you right into their world.
