About this listen
Brought to you by Penguin.
A national treasure's journey to the brink and back.
'Will I wake up?'
'There's a 50/50 chance.'
In March 2020, Michael Rosen became unwell. Soon he was struggling to breathe, and he was admitted to hospital with coronavirus. What followed was months on the wards: a month in an induced coma, and weeks of rehab and recovery as the NHS saved his life, and then got him back on his feet. Throughout it all, a diary was kept at the end of Michael's bed, where his nurses wrote him letters of hope and support. And as soon as he was awake, he was ready to start writing his own story.
Combining stunning new prose poems by one of Britain's best loved poets and the moving coronavirus diaries of his nurses, this is a beautiful story about love, life and the NHS that celebrates the power of community and the indomitable spirits of the people who keep us well.

Listen now, you will not regret it
I am not a seasoned audiobooker but boy is this worth a subscription. It’s great to hear Michael Rosen read his experiences. It feels like an honour to hear it, like he is speaking his story personally to you. It’s moving; these writings resonate with us all and in years to come will help us recall what happened and what the experience was like.

Must read for any human
Absolutely loved this book. Tender, insightful, really honest story of the fragility of being a patient from the small old age blemish to life threatening critical illness. As a nurse I’ve seen patients display behaviours in semi-conscious states and wondered what they were thinking and feeling. Thank you Michael

Poignant
What a wonderful story of resilience. To have gone through so much and be able to tell your tale with such dignity, is extraordinary.

Excellent book
Excellent book beautifully read by Michael. Very moving and a great tribute to the NHS and those who work tirelessly to care for us, whether sick with covid-19 or any other illness.

A birds eye of being in hospital
This book concentrated not just on Michael's experience of covid 19 but also the effects on the full range of healthcare staff in the NHS.
it brings a refreshing view that not only is a patient involved. The book also implies the day to day challenges and pain that covid-19 can bring and the changes the disease process can confront you with, from first diagnosis to long term challenges. An excellent book that highlights the good, the bad or ugly of being a patient in the NHS with covid 19.

Everyone should read this book
This is such an important book for our time . a time when once again the survival of the NHS is in doubt in spite of a global pandemic. A time of misinformation , disinformation and disbelief about the crisis we are facing . Sadly also a time of callous disregard by too many for anyone other than themselves. Into this world Michael Rosen , in spite of all he has been through and is still experiencing, drops illuminating gems of insight gained by painful experience but just as importantly gems of love , hope , strength and gentle humour. He never disappoints or fails to hit the mark , whatever mark he aims at and while Covid may have jiggered some parts of him he should rest assured the very very best bits are still glorious and a boon to mankind .

Great content from the start to finish.
I love this book because I have always liked his stories for my children. I am a retired nurse, so the content is of great interest to me. I also am roughly the same age as the author, so very appropriate. His voice takes me back to the tapes my children would play of him reading his poems and stories. Beautiful voice. Just sounds the same. Thank you Micheal.
