About this listen
John Churchill, the Duke of Marlborough (1644-1722), was one of the greatest military commanders and statesmen in the history of England. Victorious in the Battles of Blenheim (1704) and Ramillies (1706) and countless other campaigns, Marlborough, whose political intrigues were almost as legendary as his military skill, never fought a battle he didn't win.
Marlborough also bequeathed the world another great British military strategist and diplomat, his descendant, Winston S. Churchill, who wrote this book to redeem Marlborough's reputation from Macaulay's smears. One million words long and ten years in the making, Churchill's Marlborough stands as both a literary and historical masterpiece, giving us unique insights into the Churchill of World War II, for just as Churchill's literary skill helps us understand the complexities of Marlborough's life, so too did his writing of Marlborough help Churchill master the arts of military strategy and diplomacy.

81 hours goes surprisingly quickly
The writing flows so naturally and the narrator's voice so resembles that of Winston Churchill, it feels as if alone in the room with the great man himself.
I thoroughly enjoyed this audiobook.

A true Statesman.
So pleased that Winston Churchill was so very proud of his illustrious relative. To be followed 200 years later by another great Statesman that served the United Kingdom and the World so admirably.

Don't expect an unbiased account.
I already knew that Churchill thought that the sun shone out of etc... but the introduction tells you all you need to know about his utter devotion.
The story of John Churchill's life is absolutely fascinating, but I found that I had to keep stopping to imagine him doing something that wasn't superhumanly perfect.
Balanced and objective this is not.

Great portrait of a great man.
this is a very big book but really worth the effort it takes to listen to it. we see in detail the life of a great man but also the times he lived through, from Cromwell to George I. the vicious fights between whig and tories, the struggle to stop france dominating Europe. its also a treat to hear Winston Churchill's own words and observations. the narration of the book is excellent. I recommend this book

Brilliant!
Tremendous work. Gives one a great understanding as to how our modern nation with its concept of parliamentary democracy was forged and how the present relationship with the monarchy came to be and how much is owed to Marlborough's consolidation of the triumph of Protestantism at the time.

An incredible and important work
This is an EPIC listen - 81 hours of meticulous and fascinating history that helped win Winston Churchill the Nobel Prize for literature. It is a huge and enthralling work that opens up late 17th century and early 18th Europe. Before Marlborough Louis XIV had never lost in 50 years of warfare, but then Marlborough arrived, and he never lost a battle - won four great victories at Blenheim (one of the few battles that can legitimately claim to have changed the history of the world), the glorious Ramilies, Oudenard and bloody Malplaquet, and captured over 30 fortresses. Humane and astute, he rightly deserves his accolades.
Respect to Sean Barrett for delivering such a challenging work so well.
