About this listen

The small country of Medalon lies between the vast nation of Karien in the north and the nations of Fardohnya and Hythria in the south. For centuries the Medalonians co-existed peacefully with the Harshini, a magical race that abhors killing. But now they are gone and in their place the Sisters of the Blade rule Medalon from the Citadel. An elite army of Defenders enforces the Sisterhood's oppressive rule. The Harshini and their demons are believed to be extinct and Medalon has an uneasy peace with its northern and southern neighbours.

R'shiel Tenragan, daughter of the First Sister, and her half-brother Tarja find themselves caught up in the political infighting amongst the Sisters of the Blade. When their mother's scheming becomes too much to bear, R'shiel and Tarja are determined to follow their own path and they flee the Citadel. Their lives take a turn neither could ever have imagined and the Defenders of Medalon hunt them as traitors. Meanwhile, far south in Hythria, Brak, a Harshini outcast, is called to find the demon child, the half-human child of the dead Harshini King, Lorandranek. But what can this mean to R'shiel...?

Critic reviews

"Sparkling high fantasy debut… satisfying melodrama, stocked with well-developed characters with clear motivations that carry them through a series of byzantine plots and counterplots, a mini-rebellion and even face-to-face contact with a variety of gods." (Publishers Weekly)
"Fallon brings a fair quota of wit and a healthy dose of realism... engaging." (Kirkus)
"This is a good, solid start to what will no doubt be an epic series. Fallon's writing is strong... Epic fantasy readers will no doubt want to follow this story." (RT Book Reviews)
"Characterizations ... are well realized, and the suspense is palpable throughout." (Booklist)
"Medalon is an intriguing, intelligent and fun read with a refreshing take on female characters so often not seen in the genre." (Elizabeth Haydon)
"… fantasy fans will take to Jennifer Fallon like ducks to water. Her straightforward adventure storytelling stands to build her quite a following..." (SF Reviews)
"… a queen of the fantasy genre... Medalon is a deep draught from the well of classic High Fantasy -- and there are many readers out there waiting for their thirst to be quenched. I predict that Fallon will be a household name very soon, and not just Down Under." (SF Site)
"A gripping tale of warring ambitions, politics, and real people. The characters (and even the gods!) spring to vivid, believable life, making Medalon a great read. More, please!" (Ed Greenwood)
"[Fallon] has a sweet way with language that draws you in and compels you to read, but it was the whole political set up that intrigued me the most. She paints a very complex system with ease, so that it all comes across simply and clearly. All in all I was impressed with this first novel from a new author and I eagerly await book two." (Altair)

Good Start ..... But!

After my first foray into the books of Jennifer Fallon with Tide Lords, I thought I would try one of her older works. Whilst this has started well, the editing is poor and I am unsure whether Imogen Church was the right narrator for this particular series, although I have found her narration in a few other books I have listened to very good.

So glad to be back

If you could sum up Medalon in three words, what would they be?

political intrigue fantasy

Have you listened to any of Imogen Church’s other performances? How does this one compare?

I haven't heard any other performances by the reader

Did you have an emotional reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

I laughed out loud in my car when I relieved some of the wise cracks and scarcastic comments from the humans, and the mischief of the gods

Any additional comments?

I read the paperbacks a few years ago and after a lot of browsing decided to revisit medalon as my first download from Audible. I'm so glad I did, I now remember why I couldn't put them down all those years ago, it took me seconds to download the next book in the series. I'm also excited to see that some of her other series, which I've struggled to find in the uk, are available in audio format too.

WOW WOW WOW

Jeniffer Fallon is one of my favourite authors and imported hardback copies of the demon child sit vary proudly on my bookshelf. so it was a must to listen to on audible. I was hoping they weren't going to be ruined by bad narration. but from others reviews I was confident it wouldn't be. and I wasn't wrong there. Imogen church his amazing and brings the story alive in a way that reading cannot do. I love this book even more now than I ever did. time to start treason keep

Good Stuff! This review is for the whole series!

Where does Medalon rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

Up there with the best! Thoroughly enjoyed all of this series. it's different, humorous and a great yarn!

Who was your favorite character and why?

Adreana, she's a woman after my own heart! Fiesty & very real! Although Daman is a big scott with an attitude & sense of humour so I warmed to him a great deal!

Which character – as performed by Imogen Church – was your favourite?

The queen of The Harshini, Shananara, is the coolest woman in this book! Although she only comes into her own towards the end of the book. I am not too keen on women narrators but Imogen Church is very good at making you feel each different character without the necessity of naming them. She is very good at her trade. I would be very happy to listen to her again.

If you made a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?

Magic is very real, hidden & about to be awakened. This would only apply if the whole series of books were being made into a film or series of films.

Any additional comments?

Love it!

Can't get over the narration

I love Jennifer Fallon but the narration on this one is childish and annoying. It's too distracting.
