Summary

It was an upbringing in many ways normal. A loving home, shared with squabbling siblings, overseen by devoted parents. Yet in other ways it was the precise opposite: a revolving door of TV camera crews and documentary makers, a world of extreme discipline, of siblings vanishing in the night.

Megan Phelps-Roper was raised in the Westboro Baptist Church - the fire-and-brimstone religious sect at once aggressively homophobic and anti-Semitic, rejoiceful for AIDS and natural disasters, and notorious for its picketing the funerals of American soldiers. From her first public protest, aged five, to her instrumental role in spreading the church's invective via social media, her formative years brought their difficulties. But being reviled was not one of them. She was preaching God's truth. She was, in her words, 'all in'.

In November 2012, at the age of 26, she left the church, her family and her life behind.

Unfollow is a story about the rarest thing of all: a person changing their mind. It is a fascinating insight into a closed world of extreme belief, a biography of a complex family, and a hope-inspiring memoir of a young woman finding the courage to find compassion for others as well as herself.

Unexpectedly beautiful account

The author Megan, told her tale with a combination of introspection and humility. Her beautifully crafted words were a delight to hear, surpassed only by the power of her story, which sought to navigate the difficult terrain between cruel fundamentalism and love.

Her story feels powerful and important

It was easy to listen to, I raced through it. Megan writes so beautifully, I loved it. Her message seems so important right now. Intolerance and hypocrisy is found in so many places, yet she outlines the simple answer - understanding and compassion.

Beautiful, intelligent and honest

Megan shows unbelievable strength and natural story-telling ability through this thoughtful and eye-opening tale. I couldn’t stop listening, so engaging all the way through. Megan’s voice is also easy to listen to and therapeutic....thank you for sharing your powerful story with the world.

Couldn't put this book down.

Meghan has a lovely way with words. This book took me on an emotional roller-coaster. I was repulsed at times listening to the churches messages, but as time went on I learned about the journey that lead Fred to this point and it totally changed my perspective. I even found myself in awe of their strength of community and dedication. I cried desperately listening to the chapter when she left the church. Nothing could prepare me for reading the trauma they went through. Im left with admiration for the determination and principles it took to leave and rebuild. What interested me the most was the quote from Chad, about it being the values, strength of character and determination to do the right thing even if it unpopular that the family had instilled in their children, that gave them what they needed to leave. I hope many get to read this, to inspire an open minded outlook, full of love and determination to fight for what we believe in to make the world (and twitter) a better place. Ultimately the courage to look within without fear or ego to grow as human beings, and to not shut each other down but inspire others to grow too. Humanity at its worst and finest.

Fantastic

I really became attached to Megan over the last week as I listened to her heart slowly break as the truth unfolded itself to her and to us. She is a beautiful writer and this book is a joy to read, I’ve got pangs of grief now it’s over.
