Don't hesitate to meditate
Author of this book Henepola Gunaratana is Theravada Buddhist monk from Sri Lanka. Mindfulness in Plain English was originally published in 1992 and has become a standard text for novice westerners wanting to learn about the subject of meditation.
This book points out to the reader / listener that meditation is more than relaxation and the underlying principle is to develop awareness and the objective is to live ones life based on morality, concentration and wisdom. It also gives some top tips on how to deal with distractions whilst attempting to meditate; apparently it is expected that your legs will go numb at some point and this will cause no lasting harm.
There is also and afterword covering the subject of love and friendliness which are qualities that we should all strive for in ourselves, our nearest and dearest and, our enemies. Plenty to think about here.

Good introduction to Mindfulness
I really enjoyed this book and after reading the previous reviews was pleasantly surprised to find that although many had negatively commented on the narrator's voice I found it very pleasant to listen to.

Recipe For Mindfulness
Having read (and listened to) plenty of mindfulness books over the years I can say that for those who are looking for a clean and clear introduction to practical mindfulness and meditation, I haven't found a better book.
Every generation complains about how busy things are, but with the momentum of tech, the growth in choices and constant stimulation, we have never been less connected with others and what is going on in our own mind. This book helps us to step back (mentally) and be more aware of our thoughts.
It's not perfect. The chapter I found least useful was the 'What Meditation Isn't" part but the rest was pure gold and more than makes up for it. Don't expect that just reading it will solve your problems, this is just a how to...you have to do... for it to take effect. If you are not prepared to do, then it's probably worth selecting another book, maybe a thriller.
I've gifted the paperback version to friends and family because it was so helpful. I always worry that these types of books are religious, worthy or mystical, instead it was a practical and compassionate approach to managing our own minds and achieving a level of inner peace.
