Eileen Stevens brings a raspy, dynamic performance to Terea Frohock’s Miserere: An Autumn Tale.

This installment of the Miserere series finds exorcist Lucian Negru shortly after she’s abandoned her lover in hell to save her sister Catarina’s soul. Catarina, however, not only resists being released from hell, but attempts to enlist Lucian’s help in opening up its gates to free the Fallen's hordes into the parallel dimension of Woerld, the buffer zone between Earth and Hell. Lucian refuses to help and is imprisoned in this fiery underworld, where she must hatch a plan to save herself and the world.

Stevens’ performance, which ranges from whispery to forceful, brings out the many emotional nuances of Lucian’s fantastic journey.

Amazing, intense and haunting

While doing some research into dark fantasy authors I ran into Teresa Frohock's Miserere. It turned out to be a gem, but also an intense and at times haunting experience.

Miserere, or 'Miserere mei, Deus', is Latin for 'Have mercy [on me God]' . A fitting title for this work of fiction. The story is set in Woerld, a strongly Christian inspired world and the last line of defense between Earth and Hell. Lucian, one of the story's main protagonists, has had enough of living in his twin sister's dark presence. After yet another confrontation with Catarina he unexpectedly receives a chance to make amends for the mistakes in his past. However, if he decides to take it: there's no turning back.
Meanwhile Lindsey and Peter accidentally stumble upon the Veil. And Rachael, a judge who struggles with demonic possession, attempts to save a foundling but then ends up making a promise that will change the course of her life.

Ups: lots of suspense, very immersive story and characters really grew on me. I also very much appreciated Eileen Stevens' narration of the story. The pacing is fine, The events very moving.

Downs: some people may find this story too dark and a bit too intense. Expect exorcisms, explicit sexual content, torture. Not a young adult book imo.

On the whole much praise. And I highly recommend this book to any readers who are willing to take a little nerve wracking to get through what's without doubt an amazing story.

Excellent

Would you listen to Miserere again? Why?

I would ,The concept of woerld is great and is a different spin on the Good Vs Bad theme.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Rachel, she is strong and despite all the hardships she is resolved to do the right thing

Which character – as performed by Eileen Stevens – was your favourite?

Catarina she reminds me of old school villains and Eileen seems to have a lot of fun narrating her character.

Any additional comments?

I don't see anything about sequels in the author's website but I would love to know more about the universe .Hope Teresa writes more books in the future
