About this listen

It is London 1915 and Great Britain is at war with Germany. Stylish lady detective Miss Isabel Hewitt's manservant Clarke is away in Flanders serving in the Royal Medical Corps. Isabel is anxious for his safety.

On the Home Front she has become involved with the Women's Emergency Corps. Through this work she has met a tall, well-built young woman named Hattie Peach. Hattie is now her maid and driver. Isabel is coping with her new life and then someone murders two girls from the WEC.

These take place in Shoreditch and there are fears that Jack the Ripper may be back. Isabel is asked to investigate and she embarks on a journey which becomes both emotional and very dangerous indeed.

The story that started it all...

The miss Hewitt books begin here, its a belter! Twisty plot, a good bit of pug and excellent characterisation by the narrator who creates a clear and engaging cast.

Fun little mystery.

I recommend this book highly if you love a mystery and historical fiction. The characters are well thought out and it’s a well written story. The narrator has a fantastic ability to not only change between accents but tone and speed of speech for different characters so it’s like it’s being read by several people! I don’t know how she does that! Highly recommended.

Another great Miss Hewitt triumph.

A very enjoyable listen, with all the usual interesting characters of a Miss Hewitt novel.l particularly liked Reggie Biddle and inspector Mangle well performed by Julia Eve. A specially exciting finish.

A good introduction to the series.

I really liked this short story as an introduction to the rest of the series. There was plenty of drama and suspense along with a little bit if humour. A good listen.

The refined lady detective

The story takes place in London 1915 and Great Britain is at war with Germany. Two young girls from the Women’s Emergency Corps are murdered and she was asked to investigate by WEC leader. It was a good detective story and Miss Hewitt cracked the case in a couple of days. The narration was good although the narrator was not too good with all the voices or dialects. This didn’t spoil the story as it was well read.
