About this listen
In a city where magic is as common as air, Vince receives an offer he can't refuse.
The local wolffolk mafia longs for their glory days, and their alluring don, Alessia Lionetti, wants a powerful enforcer to bring them back. That's Vince. This is his big break from his days as a hired thug.
Working for the mafia has a short life expectancy, though. Especially in a world where the masquerade shattered long ago. Demons run banks, birdfolk ferry people across town, and the police possess crack teams of sorcerers to keep the peace. Bad news for Vince and his dreams of mafia wealth.
Not to mention that the corrupt mayor is backing the mafia's rivals or that Vince's usual employer doesn't appreciate his moonlighting. Plus, the don's sister is a wild one.
Vince might not become a made man, but his future with the mob will make him or break him.

excellent intro but want more
another great world that KD is setting up - clear politics, intrigue and characters. there are only two mild irritants: one is that Vince is a bit too passive, despite his role, and seems to be a complete waste regarding his actual talents. he's a powerful mook but doesn't capitalise on the supposed experience he has.
he is also ridiculously passive with the women, actively denying things or blocking himself. it doesn't paint a picture of a harem, not yet. the story is clearly teasing a lot of girl options but it feels like he should have 3 by the end of the book!
secondly, the plot advances only minimally. the book ended and I was left wondering what the payoff was - he has taken a single locale, scared some people and been seen as a scary threat, but the story end felt like the halfway point of KDs other novels. there was no closure on a main threat. my only worry is that there are now too many plot threads going into the next book. I'm excited for it, but this book feels like an intro that will work better in a binge of the others in a series.
loved the setup, characters and Stephanie's narration. I just wish there was a tiny bit more!

Great fun, good worldbuilding, great narration
Lighthearted for the most part even considering that it’s basically a parody of our current state of affairs in a distant future with animal guys/girls. Oh and it’s about mafia stuff but it’s not the godfather, it feels kind of videogamey with factions, but it’s fun and intriguing enough to keep you listening.
The protagonist is a good person, which clashes a bit with being a freelance mobster but it generally works. The story features real characters with flaws and even when it’s not explicitly stated it’s easy to imagine that a lot of the people involved had a bad start to their lives and grew up on a principle of power=safety and money.

Good start
While i enjoyed the world building and set up. Vince though fun and snarky at times is a bit dumb and clueless.
More of the blind bull charging in than the scalpel the Mc's from Robertson other series are.
