The story of one of the most remarkable–and feared–British aircraft of the Second World War: the de Havilland DH.98 Mosquito fighter-bomber.
Nicknamed the 'wooden wonder' for its balsawood frame, the two-man Mosquito excelled in several different roles, from reconnaissance to the bombing of sensitive priority targets. Following a Mosquito raid on the main Berlin broadcasting station on 30 January 1943, which succeeded in removing Hermann Goering from the airwaves, the Luftwaffe chief observed ruefully: 'It makes me furious when I see the Mosquito. I turn green and yellow with envy.' From the summer of that year, as RAF Bomber Command intensified its saturation-bombing campaign against German cities and industrial centres, Mosquitos were used by the RAF Pathfinder Force, which marked targets for night-time bombing, to potent and devastating effect.
David Price's involving and fast-paced narrative traces the contrasting wartime fortunes of a number of Mosquito crews, alongside which the development and operational history of the aeroplane (especially with the Pathfinder Force) forms a descant to the principal human narrative. Like the author's earlier book The Crew, Mosquito Men is rich in evocative and technically authoritative accounts of individual missions flown by an aircraft that ranks alongside the Spitfire, the Hurricane and the Avro Lancaster as one of the RAF's greatest ever.

So much more than just the story of 627 Sqn
Goes into some depth around the key proponents of Pathfinding as an operational concept within Arthur Harris’s wider area bombing strategy. Covers operations that took place using Mosquitoes by other Squadrons too and the operations of 617 Sqn. I particularly liked his analysis of certain Officers Arthur Harris, Don Bennett, Guy Gibson and Leonard Cheshire, very insightful. Well written and an easy listen as I’m not a pilot and don’t normally listen to too many books on military aviation in WW2.The book was made all the more poignant by the fact that I recently visited Woodhall Spa where the Squadron was based and visited the old airfield and dispersal area.

Enjoyable but not without faults
A enjoyable retelling of the exploits of No 627 Squadron and better than his previous book 'The Crew'. Unfortunately it shares some of the problems of that book with some strands of the story bearing tenuous links to the main topic and inaccurate technical details, many of which he slips in at the end of a sentence and leaves you wondering why he's bothered when it would have been better to leave them out.
On the plus side and also in common with 'The Crew' the book is at it's best when it's concentrating on the people and exploits of the Squadron and for this, it's well worth a listen

Mosquito Men
Pretty dull narrative and some tenuously linked side stories. Great people stuff which is when the book is at its best. Tech anoracs will probably love it but I can’t help but feel we didn’t get the whole story of the Mosquito Men.

Interesting account of one particular squadron
This is an interesting account of a squadron whose members performed courageously particularly marking targets for the heavies. It would have been, I believe, improved with rather more detail of the aircraft they flew. But the real problem is the narrator who reads without intonation in a robotic way that is very disappointing..

A remarkable story
A remarkable aircraft and stories of the courageous men who flew it.
Brought about by the vision of its designer who fought the opposition who tried to defame it.
Only a few left in serviceable flying state.

Courage and loss
The book gives a good insight into the operation and thinking of the air warfare in the European war and the role of the Mosquito planes. The reader is taken into the lives of the people who flew the Mosquito planes and shares the losses and tragedies of the men and the impact, not always as desired, of their missions.
