About this listen

A duke’s governess, a gentleman scientist, and a castle full of flowers is the perfect setting for a summer romance.

As the new governess to the duke's family, Alice Sharpe must learn to control her impulsive ways. Employment in the duke’s household is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity and could mean living in comfort the rest of her days. Unfortunately, her first encounter with the duke's neighbor, a handsome scientist, proves she may not be ready for the austere role of governess.

Rupert Gardiner has one goal: to have his work in botany published by the Royal Society. He is fortunate that his neighbor, the duke, believes in him and enlists Rupert to make a record of all the flora on the castle grounds. But Miss Sharpe’s spontaneity and continual appearance during his work is a rather annoying distraction. At least, that’s what he tells himself.

While Alice struggles to adapt to her new role, constantly battling who she is and the person she believes she must become, she cannot help but admire Rupert’s intelligence and focus. The more often they fall in together, the more her admiration deepens. But could a gentleman such as he ever fall in love with the governess?

As the first stand-alone novel in a new series by author Sally Britton, this story begins the Clairvoir Castle romances. This is a lighthearted series set in the Regency period.

It was such a lovely and enjoyable listen :)

Mr. Gardiner and the Governess was such a lovely and enjoyable listen!! I loved pretty much everything in it, and I think it is a testament to the author's writing skills that I enjoyed it as much as I did when the topic of bugs/insects and other similar fauna (*shudders*) was so front and center in the story. //

I loved the main characters, both Ms. Alice Sharpe and Mr. Rupert Gardiner, their kindness, compassion, shared love for all things scientific (but especially bug-related), as well as how perfectly suited they were for each other. I definitely enjoyed the governess trope and all the challenges it presented to the story, as well as the cast of secondary characters, and all that they added (from the Duke's kindness to the children's antics and everything in between). And of course, the developing sigh-inducing romance was just the cherry on top. //

The narrator did a wonderful job bringing all the characters to life, (from the Duke's children to the Duke himself, and all the way through Alice and the other governesses in the story), as well as their emotions (from excitement to dread, to worry, happiness, adoration and so on). And while I recall at least one time where I got confused as to who's POV it was (the tone of voice made me think it had switched to the other character), I still can't wait to listen to her performance of the rest of the series. //

Overall, this is a lovely story with great characters, an interesting setting, sigh-inducing romance, and the perfect start to Sally Britton's new series. Completely recommended to fans of the author's work as well as the Sweet Regency Romance genre.

Another great read by Sally Britton!

I so enjoyed the characters in this book! I’m already looking forward to reading the next book in the series. The character development even in the supporting characters was so well done. It felt like you were there in the story with them. I also really liked that this story was written from two points of view, from both Alice’s and Rupert’s.
I also thought the narration of this book was very well done. I’ve listened to a few stories by Jessica Elise Boyd and I’ve not been disappointed. I always find her narrative style is in my opinion excellent for both male and female parts alike and her voice and pitch is a pleasure to listen to.
I thoroughly enjoy Britton’s books. They’re always clean and wholesome, with wonderful characters that you never want to say goodbye to. These are the types of books that I enjoy reading again and again, and this book is par to the course. This book is first in a new series and I’m already eagerly looking forward to the next one! Britton is one of my go-to authors. I am happy to recommend to anyone who enjoys wholesome, clean and engaging romances.
I received a free audiobook from the author however this in no way influenced my opinion and I am under no obligation to leave this review.

From the first sentence to the last Mr. Gardiner and the Governess captured my attention. Sally Britton has delivered yet again a beautifully written story made only better by the charming narration of Jessica Elisa Boyd. I absolutely LOVED this book!! I loved the sweet relationship between the main characters and how being themselves was enough. I loved how kind everyone was especially the Duke and his family. I wish I could start the next book in this series tonight!! The narrator was fabulous!!

The best Regency romance I have “read” in a long time

In this book, Sally Britton builds beautifully on the legacy of Jane Austen and Georgette Heyer. I loved it.
