Summary

When mystery novelist Hazel Martin receives a secretive letter from an old friend who suspects her relatives have murderous intentions, she packs her bags and heads to the country.

Tampered medications, symptoms of poisoning, and suspicious accidents all add up to attempted murder, and it's up to Hazel and her Siamese cat, Dickens, to sniff out the clues. But with a house full of relatives who all have motives, will Hazel be able to unmask the culprit before things turn deadly?

USA Today best-selling author Leighann Dobbs brings back the spirit of the golden age of mysteries in this classic whodunit set in the 1920s.

easy listening cosy mystery

it was a gentle and pleasant story, with a relatively well thought out mystery, nothing terribly unexpected.

For a story set in England, the author does tend to mix up American English and British English quite frequently, e.g. trash can instead of waste paper basket and a number of other words though not enough to overly jar. Also native wildlife seems to be chosen from North American Native birds (Chickadee and Bluejay) rather than British Garden birds, such as sparrows and finches.

A little more research to better represent the era and country the story is set in would elevate the story a little further, but it was pleasant enough

Relaxing and entertaining novel

Good characterisation and enough twists to keep one entertained.
I would line to read the rest of the series but will hope they come into the same selection as they are too short to spend a whole credit on ... hence the 4 stars

Story spoilt by incorrect details.

There are no blue jays in England and water comes out of a tap not a faucet.
These errors highlighted that the author is American and spoiled the otherwise good story.

Wonderfully fun characters and story

Great performance and story - a great listen. Endearing, interesting characters and plot. A lovely fly on the wall experience of a 1930’s house party - loved it

The dreadful mixing of English and American words, most annoying

We do not have blue jays or chipmunks in the UK, Nor armoire, nor yards. I am sure that our American cousins can understand the English language well enough without gratuitous use of non-English based words. I couldn’t finish the book as this nonsense was so irritating.

Not bad but

To Americanised to be a story set in 20s England. Apart from that the story and narration are good.

England doesn't have chipmunks... we have squirrels 🐿

Adored this book, it's a proper 1920s whodunit, but I found myself pulled out of the story on several occasions whenever the wildlife was described. Ended up googling where the book was set because, Trafalgar square and several british locations were mentioned after a chapter describing the sound of chipmunks in the woods.

If your characters visit London by car, you aren't going to experience chipmunks.

The story is grand, but a number of inaccuracies were rather irritating as a british listener.

overall though I loved it and it's definitely worth a listen.

Really quite puerile

Poorly researched with regard to the apparent English country house setting / weather / plants that will grow outdoors / birds and animals native to UK. A great many Americanisms which are distracting. I guessed who the culprit was immediately.
