Summary

When a wealthy widow's life is put in danger and a mysterious amulet holds the key to the culprit, Jessie Harper and George Jenkins of the Dale Street Private Investigations Agency must use their wits and the help of Khan, a talking cat with magical powers, to unravel the mystery and save her.

It's the 1930s in Liverpool, England and Jessie Harper and George Jenkins are partners in the Dale Street Private Investigations Agency, a small but successful business that specialises in solving crimes that the police can't or won't handle usually because of paranormal connections to the crimes.

They are hired by Lady Evelyn Montague, a wealthy and eccentric widow who lives in a mansion on the outskirts of Liverpool.

She claims that someone is trying to kill her and that she has received several threatening letters. Later a guest at her mansion is murdered.

With the help of Khan, Jessie’s feline companion, who is a talking cat with magical powers, they must unravel the mystery before the killer strikes again.

Along the way, they must deal with a host of suspects, including Lady Evelyn's greedy relatives, her shady lawyer, her mysterious maid, and her eccentric friends.

They will also have to face their own feelings for each other, which they have been hiding for a long time. With help from Detective Sergeant Bill Roberts of the Liverpool City Police and using their wits, Jessie and George must find out who is behind the plot and what is the secret of the mysterious amulet before it's too late.

Really enjoyed the story. Mystery books are always fun to listen to, especially when they are well written, The story is interesting and the narration is well done.

What a mystery

This was one cracking case for the intrepid trio that’s for sure. I started to listen and found that I couldn’t stop cos I was that enthralled in it from start to finish. I loved it. I hope this series is going to run and run. What is the next one going to involve I cannot imagine. Highly recommended listen.

lovely listen

A lovely cosy mystery that you can enjoy without having to think too much. Not 100% sure the narrator has the range for all the characters but is easy on the ear

Most difficult case yet

Sorry this was just not for me. The story felt too disjointed and I struggled to follow along, it was like the author couldn't decide what the story or case should be. The story jumped from investigating the murder, to the curse of the amulet, to the malevolent ghosts, to the nasty notes, so there was a lot going on but it just didn't flow or include the reader in the discoveries before going off in a new direction. I never really connected with the characters and Jessie was just annoying, very indecisive and doubting herself but the next big clue would crack the case. This is the third book and maybe joining the series with this book has meant I don't know the characters as well as I should.
Jessie and George are hired to investigate some nasty letters Lady Evelyn Montague has received but before they do more than step in the door, one of the guests is killed in a locked room. Can the duo with the aid of there magical cat find the killer? The house feels wrong leading the three of them to believe something more is going on than just a murder. With amulets, Egyptian curses and family to contend with this might be there most difficult case yet.
The narrator certainly made the three main characters easy to tell apart with very distinctive and unusual voices.
