But the "Plunger", after stabbing his victims through the heart, leaves only tarot cards as evidence. The mayor, demanding an arrest, is also keeping a secret.
Soon, something even more dangerous threatens the city. Carter must find out what it is before it steals his sanity and the life of the woman he loves.

Great prequel
I started on this book and went straight onto the next one. The title confused me but definitely listen to it in order. The crime - the plunger worked, but nothing is straight forward. I love how the lead is not a normal detective in that he is questioning the zen etc.
The narration worked for me after I got used to it.

Will keep you guessing
I enjoyed listening to Ken Parelman, he was perfect for this book.
This is book we find Stanford Carter is back trying to find out who is 'The Plunger' who is terrorizing Boston. The Plunger is a serial killer who's cryptic and gruesome clues will keep you guessing. I was kept on my toes from the start.

Undecided
I am a bit undecided about this book. Some or it felt far fetched...and multiple times i wondered what next; can there really be a next. What i did enjoy was that this was truely new and fresh; like no other murder book i have read before.

Unnecessary Prequel
I really enjoyed the first book of this series but I really couldn’t get into this one. I felt like a prequel was unnecessary and it didn’t hit the same marks from the first book. It didn’t give any more needed insight into characters, it didn’t answer questions, it was just a case set before the first book. I didn’t find it as engaging and I struggled to enjoy it on the same level.
The narration from Ken was good but overall it’s a rare miss for me from Gary. It’s certainly not bad, it’s just not as satisfying.

Short story which gets you guessing
Carter is a good detective and a believable character. I enjoyed the plot but the narration was not really my style.
