Summary

The peace of a Midlands village is upset when local businessman Harry Bowers doesn’t return from choir practice.

More concerned than the man’s own wife, it would seem, investigating officer Detective Sergeant Sunita Roy becomes convinced he has been done away with.

But there is no trace of the man, just a litany of evidence of an ailing marriage and a nose-diving business venture.

In charge of her first serious case, DS Roy will struggle to win the respect of her colleagues—in particular her Brummie boss, DCI Gavin Roscoe. All that whilst fighting off the intentions of an increasingly desperate suitor.

Who had it in for the budding chorister? And is Roy tough enough to break down the defences and prejudices of Middle England?

The awful accents

The story itself wasn’t bad but oh god the narrator was awful! I live in the area this story is supposed to be set and the terrible dialect used made me cringe! No one around here speaks in this way and it made the characters more like joke characters! Why do people who narrate stories imagine everyone in Warwickshire and the West Midlands have the awful Brummie accent used by the narrator completely spoiled the story for me!

boring, thin plot

really disappointing. colin mace is an excellent narrator but he couldn’t save this. there was no tension or intrigue, the detective work is thin, it’s a real plodding storyline and it’s hard to care about the characters, especially some of the men who just seem dated, old fashioned and quite chauvinistic. sorry!

Detective story with twists

A complex detective story with enough convoluted twists and turns to satisfy most fans of the genre. As always, the narrator was excellent and brought another level to the tale. This is the first book I’ve listened to by Tony Bassett and it won’t be the last.

Superb narration

Colin Mace does a wonderful narration with lots of different voices. The dialogue is sharp and crisp. I enjoyed the way the book was written with most of the book being dialogue rather than narrative. For me, this made it a great book to listen to.
