Summary

An Australian girl's journey to uncover her version of the American dream—only to be faced with an American reality.

Where dreams can be made in America, they can as easily be broken. The highs can be exorbitantly high, but the lows even lower. Whilst LA is referred to as the "City of Angels", it’s also known as the "City of Lost Angels": a melting pot emanating a void of substance and also boasting a great dichotomous nature. The egoic rewards come at all types of sacrifices and costs. It’s a city that will drown out the weak and honor the crazy: That’s if you can sustain the passion and drive amidst the complex journey, which is often riddled with false pretenses, sociopathy, illusions, and many delusions.

Los Angeles is one of the most exciting, forward thinking, and creative cities in the world—full of opportunity, transience, and diversity. It attracts the ambitious and brave from all corners of the globe. And while the palm trees stand tall and the California sun is always shining, there’s a darkness simmering beneath its surface. Added layers of complexity only come with being an ambitious immigrant female with innocent pursuits in the dog-eat-dog town.

A typically trusting Australian nature can become extremely vulnerable and it’s only through firsthand experiences could one comprehend or learn about the truth that is the pedestal city of Los Angeles—one of the most attractive calling cards for a pursuit of the American dream: a memoir of self-discovery, exploration, and multilayered experiences; told through a series of true accounts by creative entrepreneur Georgii Speakman. A drama riddled with black comedy—exploring themes of self-development, female entrepreneurship, cultural division, and more.

Critic reviews

“Just like her apt last name, Georgii Speakman dares to say–and write–out loud many of the things that people are afraid to voice. The political correctness and toxic positivity that both govern and inhibit society in the third decade of the 21st century are examined and then unapologetically, earnestly and heart-fully put to the side in order for Georgii to tell her story and show that life is never just black and white–figuratively or literally. As an Australian woman who also pursued my own American dream, I understand much of what has driven Georgii to follow her complex and hugely challenging path, even though our paths and the characters we’ve encountered have often differed. It’s her fearless introspection, loving self-respect and joyful wide-eyed approach to life that makes this book so many things: an immigrant story, a road story, a woman’s rights story, a race story and most of all a love story....” (Debbie Kruger, author and entertainment industry professional)

“For me, chapter 17 in particular and your writing(s) is raw; very real, brutally honest from every angle—vulnerable, self reflecting, introspective, enlightening and necessary...." (Zeus Luby, director of programming, RED—Rehabilitation Enables Dreams)

“This says it all for me: 'All I know is that if I’d grown up black or brown and been mistreated by white people my whole life, I’d feel the gross need for an uprising and rebellion too—just as I have in my own life, but for significantly different reasons'. This one statement reads that you get it!” (Darrell Booker, corporate affairs specialist, Nonprofit Tech Acceleration for Black and African American Communities, Microsoft Philanthropies)

A must read - hilarious, enthralling and insightful

Loved this!! It’s engaging from the first page. As an expat myself the writer captures the essence of what it is to chase a dream and try to integrate into a brave new world. It’s full of insight and hilarious tales. Couldn’t put it down
