Adrian Bruton, Earl of Kilmartyn, immediately suspects there is something not quite right about his new housekeeper. The brooding, irresistible rake plays along because he has his own guilty secrets, and his venal, scheming wife holds the key to them, trapping him in a hate-filled marriage. Murder, mystery, betrayal and romance....
This is a really good story. Bryony Russell and her two sisters are left destitute and in disgrace following the unexpected death of their father who is reported to have stolen company money. Bryony suspects foul play due to a note left by her father, one of three men she believes holds the key to this information. She plans to enter the household if each as a housekeeper until she finds her answer. First on the list is the Earl of Kilmartyn. He suspects her straight away as not being who she says, and neither are honest with the other making for a great story. However, more is going on than either of them know....
I really liked the Earl, he is funny and has a real self assurance about him. However, in other ways he is sad and lonely, but he doesn't recognise it. As Bryony tries her best to be a house keeper, there is fantastic humour between them as she cannot behave as a servant should! As the mystery is developing I really couldn't guess what was going on or how this book was going to end.
This is part of a trilogy so doesn't 'end' in the traditional sense, however the story of the Earl and Briony concludes if you don't fancy reading all books (but I definitely will!). There were a few points in the story where I felt myself roll my eyes, and to enjoy it I think the reader has to overlook some pretty unlikely responses to some of the more significant events. However, this couple are so likeable I could forgive most of the things I found distracting.
I was a little disappointed when I first started listening that the narrator is American and the novel is set in London. However, the narration was generally excellent and I actually came to really love Xe Sands style.
