About this listen

Oleg Gordievsky was the highest ranking KGB officer ever to work for Britain. For 11 years, he acted as a secret agent, reporting to the British Secret Intelligence Service while continuing to work as a KGB officer. He gave such a clear insight into the mind and methods of the KGB and the whole system of Soviet government that he has been credited with doing more than any other individual in the West to accelerate the collapse of Communism.

Here, for the first time, his meticulously planned escape from Russia is described. Gordievsky’s autobiography gives a fascinating account of life as a secret agent. It also paints the most graphic picture yet of the paranoia and incompetence, intrigues and sheer nastiness of the all-encompassing and ridiculous KGB.

Excellent book and narration

The book was very interesting and the narrator has a marvellous mellifluous voice that made it a real pleasure to listen to.

Very much enjoyed this book

Would be keen to learn more about the history of modern Russia, bit probably from someone a little more objective.

Autobiography of Gordievsky

Having listened to Ben McIntyre's book I was interested to read the life account direct from Gordievsky himself. It didn't disappoint and the narration from a non native English speaker was excellent.

Fascinating read

As a person always fascinated by the Cold War this seemed to be a perfect candidate to listen to. It does certainly deliver, in both writing and the performance of Saul Reichlin.

Brilliant

I was familiar with Oleg’s story through reading a different book about him several years ago. Hearing his own words about the author’s extremely interesting life was riveting. Highly recommended.

Fascinating

An incredible insight into social experiments carried out on a giant scale. What comes across is the paranoia feeding on paranoia, and official ineptitude and unlimited interference in people’s lives. Man’s inhumanity to man knows no limitation when freedom is limited and power is not.
