Decades ago, the High King of Sundolia waged a war that vanquished the Serpent clan and drove them out of the empire. But they did not leave peacefully. Their parting gift included curses that now rest within the empire's soil, growing more and more dormant as the years pass under the rule of that increasingly tyrannical high king. Until Alaya - a young woman with a hidden Serpent mark who shouldn't exist - accidentally wakes one of them up. Then another. She must seek the truth about her lost clan and the so-called curses they left behind. About her true home.

Hank Jensen doesn't believe in monsters - not the kind Stephen King writes about at any rate. Hank is one of New York's best criminal profilers, and he loves his job. But when he meets the Bristol Butchers, all that changes. They are a pair of psychopaths - cannibals. He chases them in spite of the disabling curse they cast on him, in spite of their threats to his family, and when he catches up to them, his horror begins. I loved it!
The narrator puts life into the characters and the recording went smoothly. This is one of my favorite books and I loved the new format. The audiobook worked even when I didnt have internet, which was very useful, and the narration speed worked without glitching the audiobook, which sometimes happens with other audiobooks that ive tried. I would totally recommend this book to anyone who likes fantasy, and it is a great read for all ages.

best of the three
this book was my favorite of the trilogy. I had to listen to it to the end, even though it would put my sleep to waaayy past midnight. I don't regret it. this last book tied everything together, constantly keeping my attention and pulling at my heartstrings. ah! it was just so perfect. it made me happy, and sad, hopeful even in the endless darkness that awaits our characters, reflecting, in a way, the lives of those who read it. It's everything I could ask for in a book, and I'm sad it doesn't have more recognition.
