About this listen
In a thrilling fantasy series from the author of the Nightblade novels, revenge becomes a quest for a young female warrior.
In a feudal land, a Kingdom is at risk. With no heir to the fragile throne, its future rests with the powerful members of the dying king's Council, including Minori, a nightblade warrior, and Kiyoshi, a dayblade healer. The two men are bound by the sword but divided by two opposing principles: rule the land, or serve it. In their challenge for supremacy, a spark has been lit.
Her name is Asa. Her creed is revenge.
A fierce nightblade warrior, she's spent a decade in pursuit of the enigmatic general who killed her father in a violent revolt - then mysteriously vanished from all records. Now, her desire for reckoning has led her to the village of Two Falls - and straight into the heart of an impending civil war. Minori and Kiyoshi are vying for her loyalty. And Asa must choose sides.
As fresh betrayals unfold and a new uprising looms, Asa knows that chasing a ghost is no longer just a personal quest for retribution. It's going to alter the fate of the entire Kingdom.

Great book for all Nightblade fans - highly recommended
Relatively complex plot with lots of interesting characters, set chronologically well before the earlier Nightblade books. You are not sure who you should be rooting for and there is duty, honour, vengeance, loyalty and duplicity spread tnroughout. If you enjoyed the Nightblade series you should enjoy this equally though it does have a slightly different feel to it. Motives are more complex and maybe the tale is the better for it! I will be listening to (and reading) the next book - I will probably not have willpower to wait long. I really enjoy Emily Woo-Zeller's narration.

Love the author and the story but this narrator wasn’t up to standard for me
I’ve listened to the previous 3 books in set in this world from this author back to back . I found myself captivated and enjoyed every minute of it . The narrator was excellent and the stories were well written and fast paced. I tried this one and just didn’t like the narrator. The story is still good but I found the narrator monotone and impossible to pay attention to. This could just be a personal issue to me with the tone of her voice but I had to return it on audible and will buy a hard copy instead .

weak story and performance
Story feels rushed with a lot of assumption on main plot with lead character and not enough time spent on character building. Felt narrator didn't have the depth of voice to portray all the characters.

Not my type of book
That was a struggle, I am not a supporter of depressing finishes. The performance was excellent but the story no. Well written, beautiful descriptions, probably an epic in the making. However I read to escape to be taken out of myself not forced into introspection and doubt. Our main characters are all flawed, not likeable and fighting lost causes. This is not a tale for me.
