Galaxy 'Alex' Stern is the most unlikely member of Yale's freshman class. A dropout and the sole survivor of a horrific, unsolved crime, Alex was hoping for a fresh start. But a free ride to one of the world's most prestigious universities was bound to come with a catch.
Alex has been tasked with monitoring the mysterious activities of Yale's secret societies - well-known haunts of the rich and powerful. Now there's a dead girl on campus and Alex seems to be the only person who won't accept the neat answer the police and campus administration have come up with for her murder.
Because Alex knows the secret societies are far more sinister and extraordinary than anyone ever imagined. They tamper with forbidden magic. They raise the dead. And sometimes they prey on the living . . .

I wish there had been a warning
i loved this book once i got into it, but the graphic rape scene should have had some warning, it was important to the story I understand, but i think maybe a warning could have prepared me better, otherwise I reccomend it but you have to be able to stomach that kind of thing. The character Alex was very well developed.

A Challenge
The premise of the story is interesting, but unfortunately this book is written in such a way that it gets bogged down in unnecessary narrative and exposition to the detriment of the overall story. The pacing is really badly affected by the relentless tangents of narrative and often you get through a chapter and you've forgotten what's happening in the 'here and now' of the story.
There are a lot of info dumps that weirdly don't explain much about the different societies; it's quite pretentious and explained almost conversationally, like the author presumes you already know this information. Furthermore, the characters aren't very likeable. By Bardugo's own admission Alex is an anti-hero, but there is little that inspires you to root for her. Similarly with Darlington - he's not present for most of the book and when he is he's a smug and entitled rich boy, and not much more.
I'm going to try to persevere with this as I don't like giving up on books, but it's going to be a challenge!
*TRIGGER WARNING*
I feel the child rape was unnecessary to the story. I'm loathe to criticise Bardugo for gratuity because male authors do the same and it feels hypocritical to single her out for it. However, it does feel like it's there for shock value rather than anything else. If Bardugo needed to show that the Greys can physically touch Alex she could have gone for an infinite number of scenarios, none of which involved child rape.

Yale, students, magic, ghosts, meh...
Like many other reviewers, I found this book to be rather 'young adult'. I've read so many fantasies set in magic schools that I'm sick to death of it, and magical college isn't much better. I found the characters irritating and somehow the character of Alex just didn't seem worldly-wise enough to have had the past that's ascribed to her. Also, there are few things more irritatingly American than American college students, in nearly all literature they seem so naive and childish compared to European students. However, it wasn't so bad that I returned it - I listened to the whole book. I had previously listened to Shadow and Bone, which is one of Leigh Bardugo's young readers' titles, and I didn't enjoy that much either, so I suppose I just don't like her style.

Glad I stuck with it.
This is not great literature. You can tell this is the authors first adult fiction book. It very much comes across as a young adult fiction written with adult themes. I nearly gave up on it and it took a good few hours before I got into it. In places the story is slow and the characters are a bit cringe but overall I enjoyed it. I would listen to a sequel.

Amazing, new adult supernatural mystery!
I could easily put this as my favourite book this year and most definitely put it in my top ten books of all time.
I'll definitely be looking for more by the narrator as well as writer.
