About this listen

Deception, blackmail, murder, revenge - these are themes of stories that move from London to the coast of Spain, from Mauritius to Dublin. Whether his subject is assassination by stealth, gun-smuggling or the cruel confidence trick Forsyth is never less than compulsive.

Here are eight stories with the Forsyth touch - a brilliant and original collection by an incomparable craftsman of suspense.

Classic short storys

I read these a lifetime ago and although a little dated stand the test of time. Highly recommended.

Workmanlike short stories

I think it fair to say that Frederick Forsyth does not shine in the short story genre. While remembered for the breathtaking twists and turns of his novels, the transition to the short form results in some highly predictable plots. Only one of the stories included ('Used in Evidence') was really memorable for me, though some of the others were fun to listen to. I particularly enjoyed the stories with Irish settings, though Nigel Davenport (whose narration is otherwise excellent) loses a star for his tone-deaf, Woganesque Irish accents. This audiobook appears to be abridged, missing one or two of the stories included in the print edition. Worth buying if it's included in a sale.

Thoroughly enjoyed stories.

A clear good versus evil stance. Entertaining and meticulously well crafted stories by fabulous Forsyth.

no comebacks, great stories

I read these stores years ago, and enjoyed them again with audible. they are perhaps showing their age a little now, and the surprise endings have been copied in many more novels but I enjoyed each one.

Thoroughly enjoyed it

Made me smile, much fun, thank you. I normally prefer novels over short stories but this was a pleasant change.

Okay Collection But 2 Stories Missing!

The original book has 10 stories but here we only get 8. It should really be classed as an abridged book. The two that are missing are "There are no Snakes in Ireland" and "Duty". The former is often cited as the highlight of the book as it won a Edgar Allan Poe Award for best short story and it's really disappointing that it's missing. Why would you omit two of the stories, one of which is supposedly the highlight?

The 8 stories you do get are generally either set in Ireland or are based around a middle/upper class stiff upper lip British businessman/gentry. The latter gets a little bit wearing. The stories themselves are fine with a twist at the end although in a number you could see the twist coming.

Narration is okay although once or twice you could hear the ruffle of pages and it wasn't always obvious when one story ended and the next started.

Not essential Forsyth but any means, more for the completest (although you'll have to track down a paper copy to read the two missing stories!).
