Summary
In war time, the rules of love change….
1854. Britain is fighting a gruesome war. There has been no news of Lucy Gray since she eloped with handsome and impetuous Captain Charlie Harvington and embarked with him to the Crimea.

Takes a while but fabulous
I didn’t enjoy the beginning but once I got in to it I loved it . Gill Paul fills my historical curiosity in my sixtieth year in the same way Jean Plaidy did when I was 16.

Excellent book. Good story line, well written and read. A novel which held true to history and offered good historical education.

Good listen, but not Gill Paul’s best
I enjoyed this book and found the narrator excellent. The story was a little more dimensional than some of Paul’s previous work, however I still found it a lovely way to spend my long hours in the car. If you’re new to Gill Paul, check out some of her other books - The Secret Wife and Another Woman’s Husband were fabulous.

A Surprisingly Different Story
When I downloaded this book I was expecting the usual wartime romance and at first that's what it appeared to be. It was so much more than that and I found myself being drawn into the story. I knew nothing about the Crimean War apart from the famous Florence Nightingale. The author obviously did A lot of research of the period and this is not a frivolous romance. On the negative side I found parts of Lucy's story slightly far fetched and a little long winded at times. The narration at first I found slightly annoying but as I got into the story I thought it was excellent. On the whole I really enjoyed the book and will read more by Gill Paul.
