Summary
The award-winning author of The Hate U Give returns with a powerful story about hip hop, freedom of speech - and fighting for your dreams, even as the odds are stacked against you.
Bri wants to be one of the greatest rappers of all time. As the daughter of an underground hip-hop legend who died right before he hit big, Bri’s got massive shoes to fill. But when her first song goes viral for all the wrong reasons, Bri finds herself at the centre of controversy and portrayed by the media as more menace than MC.
And with an eviction notice staring her family down, Bri no longer just wants to make it - she has to. Even if it means becoming the very thing the public has made her out to be.

enjoyable and authentic
I loved the story. Feels like a sister novel to The Hate You Give, but chronicling another family's stuggle in the 'hood. The narrator helped to make each character come alive

Phenomenal
Absolutely incredible story and narration, I would definitely recommend this, there is a lot of swearing though.

Loved it, so engaging to listen to
The voice acting was awesome, couldn’t fault it.
At times a difficult text to perform, with some parts requiring great timing and a lot of important tonality. Great job!
I’m an adult, and I believe this is “young adult”, I found the story engaging with a good pace to it. I liked and cared for the characters.
Just heard it’s being adapted for tv or movie too and I’m not surprised! A really enjoyable listen.
I definitely learnt a thing or two about GOATS (greatest of all time) hip hop performers, and I feel enriched from experiencing the text.

Really Enjoyed this Book
As inner city mother of a silent teen boy enthralled by rap music, a world away from my head set, I really enjoyed this story about a sassy black teen girl, full of gumption telling the reader about her complex family and school life, and how she dares to stand up to she stands up to institutional racism, chauvinism and family conservatism. It's full of twists and turns, funny, poignant and very well constructed. The reader Bahni Turpin brings it life with great characterisation, accents and intonation.

Great story, excellent performance
Loved Bri's story and those of all the supporting characters. Extremely good performance from the narrator. While we're here, Black Lives Matter. Solidarity. <3

Good book
Good book that gives insight to the black lives matter movement in a way that everyone can understand and the book is still enjoyable. I would recommend it, the only thing that let's it down is that the narrator puts on a fake sounding slow sweet voice quite often which sounds like someone trying to be younger than they are which slightly takes my mind out of the book.

I never knew I liked rap until I heard this
Different, pacey and plenty of food for thought. The brilliant narration elevated this to a class above and the story line didn't let up once.

Predictable plot but well written and performed
Whilst the plot is very predictable and nothing unexpected happens it is a very well written story and well told by the narrator. I really enjoyed it and it’s definitely worth a listen
