About this listen
A retelling of the story of the Duke of Windsor - King Edward VIII, who gave up his throne to marry the woman he loved.
Using never before seen sources, Once a King is a fresh, revelatory and gripping insight into the Duke of Windsor - King Edward VIII - who gave up the throne to marry the woman he loved, twice divorced American Wallis Simpson.
Considering Edward VIII's travels and interests as Prince of Wales as well as his relationship with Wallis Simpson and the course of events leading up to his abdication and subsequent exile, Once a King offers a previously unexplored lens through which we encounter first-hand the hitherto concealed subtlety and raw emotion of two of the twentieth century's most iconic Royal figures: the Duke and Duchess of Windsor.

The Lost King
In the modern day where media interest in the Monarchy exceeds that of the general public it was interesting to read this detailed account of Edward’s reign. He would have made a great King but he was denied the privacy of a personal life and happiness and in the light of unfolding events of the last century and of today I am left with the feeling that the current model for the Royal family of devoted service for life needs a radical rethink.

Nothing redeemabale about this King
Personally, I found the mannered delivery by Esther Wane annoying throughout. Something about her overly contained way of speaking is quite irritating. The worst element though is Edward himself. A self-centred, lazy and disloyal person by nature he showed constant poor judgement and a core of unpleasantness. He did the country a favour by abdicating That he tries to make himself a victim resonates in his permanently aggrieved great-great-hephew today.
