It's no like it's good

This book seems darker than the rest of the books in the series, as the author is obviously starting to take it in a different direction but it is just as good. It's only darker because Cal's secret is out and somebody wants to use it for there own gains, also the ghost is a lot more violent. That's not to say it's scary or graphic, just a more involved story with a hidden gender. This might work as a standalone but I think this book works best if you know what has happened previously and would highly recommend you start at the beginning. I like the characters but was disappointed that Teddy (Cal's by the book partner) wasn't involved more but with all good mysteries there is a reason, no spoilers here. It's not so much a murder mystery where you guess who the killer is, as so much more is going and is more a let it unfold investigation. It doesn't end on a cliff hanger as such because most of it gets wrapped (with just a few questions that I think will carry into the next book) but with the way the author ended it you will want to get the next book to see what happens.
With somebody making a run for the sheriff's job the last thing he or his deputies needs is several missing persons cases or a FBI agent requesting the help of Calamity 'Cal' James. Cal is torn she doesn't want to get involved with the FBI, especially with her unique talents and she wants to help the sheriff save his job by finding the missing people. Can she do both? When one of the missing turns up dead everything points to her needing to use her special talents before anybody else gets hurt but the FBI knows more than he should and with him keeping secrets of his own things get complicated. Just when Cal could use help from her sister and work partner, her sister isn't talking to her partner is off sick. Can Cal finally gain the trust of her fellow deputies and unit with a common goal, save Red River?
I liked the narrator and am glad the author has used her throughout the series, as she brings her own spark to the stories.
