Summary

It is the Edinburgh Festival. People queuing for a lunchtime show witness a road-rage incident - an incident which changes the lives of everyone involved.

Jackson Brodie, ex-army, ex-police, ex-private detective, is also an innocent bystander - until he becomes a suspect.

With Case Histories, Kate Atkinson showed how brilliantly she could explore the crime genre and make it her own. In One Good Turn she takes her masterful plotting one step further. Like a set of Russian dolls each thread of the narrative reveals itself to be related to the last. Her Dickensian cast of characters are all looking for love or money and find it in surprising places. As ever with Atkinson what each one actually discovers is their true self. Unputdownable and triumphant, One Good Turn is a sharply intelligent read that is also percipient, funny, and totally satisfying.

Abridged!

A very good author, and well narrated, but sadly I didn't realise that it was an abridged version. Totally ruined it for me.Can we please have a full version?

Would have loved to have had an unabridged edition

This was fantastic. Kate Atkinson at her best. Jackson Brodie is a wonderful character, brilliantly narrated ("Hello to Jason Isaacs"). I wish this had been available unabridged when I downloaded - I think there is a an unabridged edition available now, however. Sometimes I didn't feel I was getting the full story, hence only 3 stars.

Another great story...why abridged?

This is another great Jackson Brodie story, any fan of the books or the television adaptation will love it. As other reviewers have also mentioned though, it is a real shame that this is an abridged version. Given the number of listeners who have complained about this I really hope that a full version will be made available eventually.

abridged - didn't realise

I missed that this is abridged until after. It has ruined the series a bit for me, unfortunately

Nasty bits

Whether it’s the fact that the audible versions of thee books are abridged, or just that the character building is dreadful I don’t know. The first audible book in the series ‘ Case Histories’-should have come with an audible explicit warning due to part of its content towards the end. If it’s abridged why not remove the nasty stuff? On the next ‘One good turn’ the story is Poor and contrived and the characters shallow and lack lustre. I don’t think I can be reading these books with the same night as the mass majority who enjoy Kate Atkinson’s work. Not for me and I don’t even want them in my audible library - I’m requesting a refund.

Brodie, Russians & Mermaids @ the Edinburgh Fest.

I had the real feeling of Jackson's adventures being wrapped up and twisted within the real world.
very readable/listenable. Jason could read the phone book and I'd listen, and Kate could write the phone book and I'd buy the first copy.

Abridged version!

I wish audible would make it clearer when books are abridged, I accidentally downloaded this instead of the proper version then spent ages wondering why the story felt thin and too short! Especially compared to the first one. It was fine but now I’m wondering how much better it would have been to listen to the whole thing.

entertaining but not a favourite

Lots of characters meant to start with meant you needed to concentrate to keep track but soon worked it out. the end seemed to come before the story had really got interesting but it was entertaining enough
