Summary

The Clifton Chronicles is Jeffrey Archer's most ambitious work in four decades as an international best-selling author. The epic tale of Harry Clifton's life begins in 1920, with the chilling words, 'I was told that my father was killed in the war.' But it will be another 20 years before Harry discovers how his father really died, which will only lead him to question: who was his father? Is he the son of Arthur Clifton, a stevedore who worked in Bristol docks, or the first born son of a scion of West Country society, whose family owns a shipping line?

Only Time Will Tell covers the years from 1920 to 1940, and includes a cast of memorable characters that The Times has compared to The Forsyte Saga. Volume One takes us from the ravages of the Great War to the outbreak of the Second World War, when Harry must decide whether to take up a place at Oxford, or join the navy and go to war with Hitler's Germany.

Jeffrey does it again

Yet Another fantastic story. Holds you from the first page and leaves you hanging for the next book. Highly recommend

Entertaining to say the least.

Well narrated and easy to listen too. Enjoyed the simplicity of the storyline with the maybe slightly predictable ending. Still, can't wait to listen to the second in the series.

Disappointing

Just didn't enjoy this book. Seemed to ramble on and on , rather tedious to listen to. In truth I'm not a J Archer fan I suppose.

Narration was excellent. Gripping story but

Not my first JA book and I thoroughly enjoyed both but this one was abridged and, at the end, I did feel a bit cheated. Also the timeline jumps around with no warning (dates would be good) and when listening no chapter headings which is a bit confusing. Still my best listen for a while!

And they all lived happily ever after.

Having read a lot of Archer books , I cannot comprehend why he went down this style of writing . It’s something that I might enjoy as a child. Each outcome was totally predictable. Very disappointing. B. Mitchell.

Wonderful!

My Mum recommended I order this book, describing Jeffery as a compelling story writer and narrator. I could not agree more. Jeffery has weaved a spellbinding tale and his narration can only be compared to Stephen Fry’s narration of the Harry Potter stories. This book is the first in a series about a young commoner with the name Harry Clifton, but every character has a rich tapestry of history interestingly described throughout. Im hooked and will be immediately purchasing a credit so I might crack on with the second book.

This revision is abridged and such a lot has been deleted - confusing

This is the unabridged version and the timelines are very confusing. I will only read the unabridged for the next books. Story is OK.

Not my cup of tea

Just read a whole series of the last kingdom and this just does not compare. I could not finish it. I am probably comparing apples and pears.
