Editor reviews
The protagonist of Others literally begins his journey in hell as a tormented soul until two angels make him a proposition for a chance at redemption through a mission on the surface. Reborn as a private investigator in England with no memory of his past life, he is sent on an investigation that takes him to a nursing home and unlocks mysterious secrets of his personal and the demons of Others. Kris Dyer performs the audiobook with a gripping and macabre style that puts you into the detective's plight. Any fan of James Herbert's will delight at this chilling and inventive tale that keeps your blood pumping until the very end.
Summary
The ugly truth. Nicholas Dismas is a Private Investigator, but like no other that has gone before him. He carries a secret to which not even he has the answer. Dismas is hired to find a missing baby. One that was taken away at birth... Or was it?
His investigation takes him to a mysteriously located place called Perfect Rest, a nursing home for the elderly. Here Dismas will discover the dark secret of the Others. And in an astonishing and spectacular finale he will resolve the enigma of his own existence.
James Herbert was one of Britain’s greatest popular novelists and our #1 best-selling writer of chiller fiction. Widely imitated and hugely influential, he wrote 23 novels which have collectively sold over 54 million copies worldwide and been translated into 34 languages.
Born in London in the forties, James Herbert was art director of an advertising agency before turning to writing fiction in 1975. His first novel, The Rats, was an instant bestseller and is now recognised as a classic of popular contemporary fiction. Herbert went on to publish a new top ten best-seller every year until 1988. He wrote six more bestselling novels in the 1990s and three more since: Once, Nobody True and The Secret of Crickley Hall. Herbert died in March 2013 at the age of 69.
Critic reviews
"There are few things I would like to do less than lie under a cloudy night sky while someone read aloud the more vivid passages of Moon. In the thriller genre, do recommendations come any higher?" (Andrew Postman, The New York Times Book Review)
"Herbert goes out in a blaze of glory" ( Daily Mail)

Awful, narration, weak story, obvious ending.
Kris Dyer. if ever a person was miscast in a voice role this is the epitome of oops.
A soft, lilting almost Irritating voice that would be better suited to a voiceover on the bake off adds very little to a story of fantasy and horror. Julian Clary is a master of his profession, but this felt like Clary being asked to narrate the Texas chain saw massacre in the style of the Nigella Dawson, twee, breathless and oh so weak.
Story, weak, obvious and cliched in its entirety, but I can, hand on heart state that this is the first James Herbert, I have been disappointed in. Cannot say if a better vocal artist may have improved matters, but I doubt it.

Very well written with good character development. One of the most disturbing books I've listened to on here.

I would recomend this book a good read
Would you consider the audio edition of Others to be better than the print version?
I have not read the book. The detail of the characterS was very good, I didn't realise this was based on a true events and shocked me even more at the end to fine this out. The book was very good at putting both views across.
What other book might you compare Others to, and why?
I would compare this with Beautiful Mind and The Elephant Man
Which scene did you most enjoy?
I think the scene in the News agent was very effective
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
I didnt want to put this book down, I actually found it hard to sleep until i finished it.
Any additional comments?

A really great and different read
I love James Herbert. So I'm biased. Did I love the books 2&3 of the Rats - er, not so much, but did I love this, yes. All the better that it's based on a true story.
Narrator was good, convincing. Characters were enveloping, and the plot, it was brilliant. Missing his writing now he's gone - but the brilliance lives on

So bad I struggled to finish
The story is absolutely ridiculous, and some events will make your eyes rolled to the back of your head (like when they have a heart to heart convo in the middle of a fire!!).
The narration is whiny and made me dislike the main character.
One of the worst book I listen to in a while

Perhaps should have read this 20 years ago...
I seem to have read too many Eion Colfer and Terry Pratchett books (and the tv series of Good Omens is still fresh in my mind) to have found this at all scary. The hospital is sinister, but I couldn’t help wondering what Mel Brooks would have done with it.
Having said that, I was interested to stay to the end and was curious to know how our hero got out of various situations. Glad I listened, but won’t listen again.

one of the most boring listens do far on audible.
this is a very dull story with a weak main character with no self redeeming qualities. The narrator didn't do anything to help the story along☹️☹️
