Summary

England is at war. Growing up in a lighthouse, Pet's world has been one of storms, secret tunnels and stories about sea monsters. But now the clifftops are a terrifying battleground, and her family is torn apart.

This is the story of a girl who is small, afraid and unnoticed.

A girl who freezes with fear at the enemy planes ripping through the skies overhead.

A girl who is somehow destined to become part of the strange, ancient legend of the Daughters of Stone....

Beautifully written!

An exciting read. With lots of mystery and excitement, this is a story that you won't want to put down until you have read the whole book. It certainly did not disappoint!

Good

I liked that the author is also the narrator and did a great job, her voice is very soothing too.

Outstanding!

This is a beautiful, powerful and important story. Deeply moving: I had tears in my eyes at the ending. Beautifully written and narrated.

Bleak and upsetting

The plot was relentlessly dark. Constant injustice, loss and injury with no relief. The main character is a bit wet. It's a change to have an anxious child as the protagonist I suppose, but she isn't very good at anything. As an anxious kid myself, I'd rather my anxious character had more to her than just being anxious and confused. I was also really frustrated that almost every problem the family had would have been avoided if they'd just flippin talked to each other!

Strong and Engaging

Very strong story that’s engrossing with twists and turns that carry one deeper and deeper into the mystery. I’ve enjoyed this as an adult who wanted a good listen. The characters, their motives, relationships and circumstances have a depth that has added to the pleasure. They change and grow as the story unfolds. If there is a message that stands out, it’s that good people sometimes do bad things, but there is also a lot about honesty and forgives too.

This book kept us all riveted - fifty something father down to nearly six year old daughter. Incredible story of life in WWII England, will go down as one of our all time favourites.
