Summary

A mysterious boatman on the Thames, a drowned heir, a dustman and his wife, and a host of other Dickens characters populate this novel of relationships between the classes, money, greed, and love. The 58 characters are presented with remarkable clarity by David Timson.

Critic reviews

"With a cast of characters that covers the whole spectrum of London life, Dickens weaves a tapestry of tales that are by turn funny, moving and tragic." (School Library Journal)
"The fact that Dickens is always thought of as a caricaturist, although he was constantly trying to be something else, is perhaps the surest mark of his genius." (George Orwell)

A Fantastically Written Story!

This book is a fantastic story full of mystery, romance, intrigue, deception, more than one fabulous twist! Written by the wonderful Charles Dickens, he was a genius! Wonderfully narrated by David Timson, who has a skill of keeping you interested, bringing each character to life, with a voice for each! filled with excellent story telling and humour. This is my second book narrated by David Timson, the other being Dombey & Son, also by Charles Dickens, highly recommend both of these books!

Outstanding dramatisation and delivery.

How the reader managed to give such varied voices to so many characters was superlative, and never muddled them. Dickens stories are beautifully written and satisfyingly complete. This is one of the best on offer.

absolutely brilliant 👏

Dickens at his best, except for the chapter that coincides with his real life train accident. can you spot which chapter?

Our Mutual friend

And so it came to pass.
This is the first of Dickens novels, I’ll admit I struggled a bit with, which is rather ironic, as it’s his penultimate offering.
I’m not a romantic, so for this reason, my review of the book could seem a little skewed, but it came across as too saccharine and over flowery with characters seeming too good to be true or over bearing like Wrayburns ‘death bed’ reluctance to have arrested his would-be murderer,or the constant tears the female characters seem to be enveloped in.
Even the villains seem substandard, compared to a Quilp Sykes or Squeers.
That said Timsons representations of the characters are possibly the most remarkable I’ve heard in any audiobook.
Listen, and see what you think.

Terrific performance

I found David Timson's rendering of the great range of moods and voices in this powerful novel extraordinary and enhancing.

Brilliant reading

Dickens is not to everyone’s taste and certainly the sentiment is piled on thick, but this is a marvelous performance by a brilliant actor.

An entrancing story

This is stunningly narrated and the story is incredible. The character of Riah is fascinating after reading the hideously antisemitic Fagin in Oliver Twist. What a turn around for Dickens….

excellent reading

David Timson is a gifted narrator with a seemingly endless repertoire of characterful voices which do the novel full justice. Our Mutual Friend was not favourably reviewed when it was first published but this reading is hugely enjoyable and places many of the characters among Dickens's most memorable.
