Summary

Regan was a robotics scientist that caused the robot takeover of the world. When his last creation finally completes his plan to free himself, it destroys the world in the process. Destruction offers him a second chance to test his wits and cunning in another world. Now tasked with a goal that would upset the balance of a new world, Regan might be a bit more than the people of the world can handle.

This is an alternative retelling of the first Dungeon Robotics book: Establish. All the characters have been altered slightly, and there are new characters. Only the initial chapters have a resemblance to the first book and quickly change paths to a darker side of things.

A darker take on a dungeon core story

A darker take on what a dungeon core could be, with some interesting ideas.

I've listened to all of Peed's older Dungeon Robotics Series available on this platform. While not perfect, I really enjoyed his previous series as a fun, power-fantasy romp.

This starts off as a darker, alternate-universe version of that, where everyone is a bit of a d*ck.

While it does not have the same immediate 'hook' of a robotic engineer in a magical fantasy realm as the first series. This story does take some interesting turns.

Peed's writing has improved with this book, a lot of superfluous 'side-story' has been streamlined, where before you really needed to happen to like the details about the robots, dungeon decoration and 'how cool or hot' the characters were, now he has created a more consistent story driven experience. Some of the these flaws linger here and there, but nothing too obtrusive.

Oddly enough, it feels as if there is a bit more of a focus on character development is this version, which is a not the author's forte. The bizarre world, systems and magic Peed created in his first book take a backseat in this current series, which I feel was the main appeal of his books. If this was the authors conscious decision, it is a bold one, but for me personally this means that I enjoy this less than the Robotics series.

I also really dislike the narrator for this audiobook, Morris' sentence cadence is very stop-start; the rhythm of speaking often is not inline with the end of the sentence. Sort of a William Shatner's "Capt. James T. Kirk" type of narration.

Much better!

Enjoyed this version alot more than the original. Tristan is not my favourite narrator but still does a stand up job. Keep them coming!
