Summary

From the author of the highly acclaimed The Butchers of Berlin comes a devastating, haunting and brilliant follow up....

By 1943 Auschwitz is the biggest black market in Europe. The garrison has grown epically corrupt on the back of the transportations and goods confiscated, and this is considered even more of a secret than the one surrounding the mass extermination.

Everything is done to resist penetration until August Schlegel and SS officer Morgen, after solving the case of the butchers of Berlin, are sent in disguised as post office officials to investigate an instance of stolen gold being sent through the mail. Their chances of getting out of Auschwitz alive are almost nil, unless Schlegel and Morgen accept that the nature of the beast they are fighting means they too must become as corrupt as the corruption they are desperate to expose.

Even if they survive, will it be at the cost of losing their souls?

Stunning from beginning to end. 5 *Saskia Reeves

Amazing how one person can have such a totally different experience of the same book and narrator.

Saskia Reeves narrated this wonderful book with an other worldly distraction that was completely perfect for this hideous story - I loved that she brought the feminine part of our hero Shlagel to the front, his anxiety and fear. It was spectacular.

Also of course having so many female characters in this book, it was a genius choice to switch it up. If only the Femme Fatale from the first book had been given to this too, I would have enjoyed that.

The book is brilliant. Utterly fantastic. Having just finished it, my heart is still racing and Im desperate for the next instalment.

How Petit links so many relationships, sex and death is breathtaking to me.

Thank you all.

Great Book, Poor Narrator

Having thoroughly enjoy the two other books in the series, I was thoroughly looking forward to this one but it comes with a different narrator..? Unfortunately just couldn't warm to the narrator used on this book, so as such it impacted greatly upon the ability to enjoy the book, it's characters and plotline!
This is just my personal opinion but I note it's one also echoed in other reviews.

I just don't think a female narrator was right for this story. should have kept the guy who did the previous book. story below par too
