Summary

Mervyn Peake was a writer, artist, poet and playwright, best known for his gothic masterpiece, the Gormenghast trilogy. This selection of works from Peake’s Progress includes some of his most characteristic and memorable poems and short stories, from memories of the horrors of the concentration camps at Belsen to the fantastic wit of his nonsense poetry. The selection includes 'The Rhyme of the Flying Bomb', 'The Weird Journey', 'Mr Slaughterboard' and 'Danse Macabre'. It is read by Mervyn Peake's sons, Sebastian and Fabian Peake.

A small selection of a selection

What you get here... is fine. The always-fascinating writing of Peake, well-performed. But 'Peake's Progress' is a massive compendium of Peake's work and this is a slim pick of it.
What you get with this purchase is mostly the poetry, with very few of the short stories and none of the plays. A lot of the most memorable parts are missing: no 'Captain Slaughterboard', no 'Boy in Darkness', no 'For Mr Pye: an Island', no 'The Wit to woo'.
I'd be prepared to pay a higher price for a more complete version.
