La historia del seminarista enamorado de la prometida de su padre viudo y los conflictos que crea esa rivalidad, estan acertadamente descritos en una novela donde se mezcla la ironia con un desarrollo argumental original (la mayor parte de la obra usa el genero epistolar) y con un inesperado desenlace. Los sentimientos de todos los personajes se cristalizan en esta, una de las grandes novelas espanolas del siglo XIX.
