About this listen

Anne Elliot has grieved for seven years over the loss of her first and only love, Captain Frederick Wentworth. When their paths finally cross again, Anne finds herself slighted and all traces of their former intimacy gone. As the pair continue to share the same social circle, dramatic events in Lyme Regis, and later in Bath, conspire to unravel the knots of deceit and misunderstanding in this beguiling and gently comic story of love and fidelity.

Editor reviews

Listening to Juliet Stevenson's marvelous narration, one wonders if she collaborated with Austen in another life. Her narration enhances the text so beautifully that one thinks the author must have coached her. Stevenson applies vocal interpretations that make the characters pop with life. Mary whines and exclaims perfectly; Admiral Croft snaps listeners to attention; Sir Walter Elliot effervesces with indignation over the state of his finances. Only Anne Elliot and Frederick Wentworth speak in calm, measured tones. Nestled in social commentary targeting the matter of class, the story traces the twists and turns that Anne and Frederick must navigate on the road to love.

Yet another Classic

What did you like most about Persuasion?

Having read the book many times I never cease to enjoy this story. I love all the books written by Jane Austin and hope to build up my library of old favourites now that my sight has deteriorated and I can o longer see well enough to read them myself.

What did you like best about this story?

As in all Jane Austin's books I love the development of her characters, descriptions, and the plot. It is also set in an era I particularly like.

Have you listened to any of Juliet Stevenson’s other performances? How does this one compare?

Yes I have and enjoyed them as I did this one.

If you made a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?

Stick to the story as written!
