About this listen
In this eye-opening book, psychologist Jesse Bering argues that we are all sexual deviants on one level or another. He introduces us to the young woman who falls madly in love with the Eiffel Tower, a young man addicted to seductive sneezes, and a pair of deeply affectionate identical twins, among others. He challenges us to move beyond our attitudes towards "deviant" sex and consider the alternative: What would happen if we rise above our fears and revulsions and accept our true natures?
With his signature wit and irreverent style, Bering pulls back the curtains on the history of perversions, the biological reasons behind our distaste for unusual sexual proclivities and the latest research on desire. Armed with reason, science, and an insatiable appetite for knowledge, he humanises deviants while asking some provocative questions about the nature of hypocrisy, prejudice, and when sexual desire can lead to harm.
A groundbreaking look at our complex relationship with our carnal urges and the ways in which we disguise, deny, and shame the sexual deviant in all of us, Perv brings hidden desires into the spotlight.

Brilliant & brave book
This book is beyond fascinating and I really commend the author for dealing with such difficult subjects that could easily be twisted out of context. Definitely made me feel less weird/alone about my own kinks. Great performance and audio too - an all-around top-quality audiobook.

Non judgemental, informative and funny
I loved this book! I learned a lot about things different to my own experience and while most of the book was delightful and funny there were moments where it challenged my perceived beliefs and I think it opened my mind a little more. Honestly loved this book and would definitely recommend

Brave and important book
This is a one of a kind. You must be seriously open to hear and listen to this book arguments and analysis without jumping out of your seat in disgust, anger or outrage. A word of warning, Mr Bering does not shy away from discussing anything in regards to the twisted world of kinks and perversions. There is literally no stone unturned. It is often shocking to listen to and even disgusting for my own perspective. However it is done in such intelligent, non judgemental and brave way in my opinion. This book is actually essential to understand who we are as humans. Too much hypocrisy, finger pointing, witch hunting, rage is being displayed in our time when it comes to this subject. I applaud the writer for his bravery. If you are interested in psychology and understanding who we are then this book is essential. If I was to make a criticism is that I would say the subject of fantasy is not explored enough. Fantasy and play vs real desires are not explored in contrast and details. It seems at time that the argument is more you are that way and live in a hidden world and frustration or you are not. I am very much interested to understand the world of fantasy. I remember playing sword fighting with a young boy of 3 years old and as I was pretending to die and fall on the floor this little man held my head and pretended to slice my throat. Of course completely innocent play and this little boy never ever has or will have desire to harm anyone. He was playing and getting some pleasure in this acting. Though my curiosity was to ask myself where does it comes from at such a young age ? This fantasy play is generally understood when it comes to young children and war games or people enjoying video games to be just that, play with no desire to act in the real world. This is not so much understood and accepted in relation to sexual fantasies and play. This book does not really explore that contrast and perspective unfortunately. Nevertheless, I was really happy to discover and listen to this book even though, sometimes , I felt like vomiting . Sexuality is often this hidden taboo subject, well , Jess Bering has opened all the dark cupboards of sexual perversions in humans. Be warned.

Bill Bryson meets David Sedaris
I really liked this book - full of interesting facts, and a useful account of how attitudes in psychology have changed over time. The author reads really well, and has an offbeat style that put me in mind of David Sedaris; and with the ability to make facts and references interesting in the way that Bill Bryson does, this is an invigorating listen.

Interesting….
It’s well researched and not without humour. We are in no doubt as to the authors own sexual preferences which omitting when writing a book like this would have likely been the cause of questions. It was interesting but nothing more.
