Summary

The murder has been solved. But has justice been done? Harry Hole is back in Oslo. He's been away for some time, but his ghosts have a way of catching up with him. The case that brings him back is already closed. There is no room for doubt: The young junkie was shot dead by a fellow addict. The police don’t want him back....

Denied permission to reopen the investigation, Harry strikes out on his own. Beneath the city's eerie tranquillity, he discovers a trail of violence and mysterious disappearances seemingly unnoticed by the police. At every turn Harry is faced with a conspiracy of silence. The criminals don’t want him back....

Harry is not the only one who is interested in the case. From the moment he steps off the plane, someone is watching his every move and tracing his every call. Someone wants him silenced.

Welcome back Harry

Well...Jo Nesbo has done it again...another dark, complex Harry Hole book....I can't help it, I just love them all. This latest offering takes you on an emotional rollercoaster for Harry, as the plot twists and turns in the usual Nesbo fashion. Obviously enhanced by Sean Barrett's addictive voice, I thoroughly enjoyed Phantom...and am hoping for another Harry very soon....

The Phantom- brining Harry Hole full circle

I have loved all the Harry Hole books - more so because of Sean Barrett's audio versions. The Phantom sees Harry return from Hong Kong to recapture his old life, but another story unfolds we see the return of some other familiar characters. For me this book brings us full circle, and it starts to show hope and then the familiar despair within Harry's character and life. I finished the book two weeks ago. I have not stopped thinking about it and it has had a lasting effect. The depth of characters and the interweaving of storyline cements Jo Nesbo as one of the great crime writers. Highly recommended.

Perhaps not the best Harry Hole

I have to agree with those reviewers who said that this story goes a bit too far in bending the rules of believability. There are a number of scenes where Harry seems to be living too charmed a life. The story, as ever is a good one and Sean Barrett is my favourite reader but overall, this book was slightly spoiled by having to suspend disbelief from the stratosphere! Otherwise, I would have given it 5 stars.

Harry the super super hero

I have loved all the Harry Hole books but I agree with the previous reviewer that Harry has powers of endurance beyond belief, that said I did love this book it has more twists and turns than a corkscrew and does keep you guessing until the very end. This is a tale of addiction and corruption which Harry susses out in his usual heroic style and a very surprising ending. Would recommend.

The Price of Addiction

Phantom is a heartbreaking study of addiction - not just looking at the terrible price paid by the addict but also the dreadful effect it has on family and loved ones.
This is the most personal crime Harry has ever investigated, and the most difficult. Many of the characters we have grown to know and love over the course of the series appear in this book as Harry finds himself struggling to save those he loves whilst becoming embroiled with Russian drug lords and corrupt officials.
Everything we love and hate about Harry comes together in this novel as we race toward the conclusion. Sean Barret narrates the story as well as ever and has become the voice of Harry to me. An enthralling listen that leaves a lasting impression.

Edgy and dark, a triumph.

This wonderful thriller is not for the feint hearted, or for the reader who is looking for a relaxing listen. It is however absorbing and slowly gravs the reader and brings you into the gritty world of the Oslo drug scene. Nesbo's great skill is to slowly build the plot around great characters.

This book is quite different to anything else Nesbo has written. Part of the narrative is written through the eyes of the murder victim, this format however works well. As usual Sean barrett does a great job, his ability to bring characters to life I believe makes him one of the best narrators out there.

The book ends on an absolute knife edge, and the reader is left to reach their own conclusions, but the author leaves us enough clues, to hope that Harry Hole will be back.

Addictive reading but with some flaws...

I love the Harry Hole series and this is no exception. However, as one reviewer states Harry Hole does appear to go from one exceptionally dangerous situation to another escaping death by a hair's whisper each time. It does feel a little over the top compared to the previous books.

However, that said, I loved this book as I love the whole series. Sean Barrett's reading is exceptional and I am gripped as always by the main characters and how they evolve. Can't wait for the next book, really hope there will be one!
