About this listen
Phoenix is the true story of intrigue, danger and family loyalty centred within the Northern Ireland Troubles. This is the voice of Detective Superintendent Ian Phoenix and his dedicated journey from paratrooper to police officer. IRA assassinations, covert police and SAS operations, with Booby trap bombers and snipers making the rules of the era.
The audio version of the original best-selling book, narrated by Ian’s son, continues to intrigue and inform listeners about a very different life in Northern Ireland, as it was during those dangerous times.
The family’s lives were wrapped in danger too, but cocooned in love and sustained by Irish humour in an outdoor lifestyle, surrounding their wild coastal home.
Hearing his son's voice read his father's words is nostalgic. It has recaptured a richness to those years in spite of the danger under which the family lived. It provides meat to the anonymous bones of normal life during the Irish "Troubles". Phoenix ultimately describes the disastrous killing of 29 good people in a military helicopter crash that has never been adequately investigated or explained.
Hear how PHOENIX revealed for the first time the undercover war of covert police and SAS operations in an arena where the rules were made by bombers and snipers in the shadows. It tells how the man responsible for almost wiping out the British cabinet was caught, saving the lives of those targeted for death by the IRA.
PHOENIX takes the listener behind the scenes and uncovers shocking details of previously unknown bravery.
It shows how love and real family life can sustain a man during a dangerous career that was part of Irish history.

Story chills me, Great book to listen to.
This book has made my mind up on the troubles. I don't know how Simon manged to put aside his anger in dealing with the troubles.
Who I am to say he done a magnificent job in the Regt and in policing, this book showed how hard it was to sit on the fence and do all the jobs in the RUC.
Sounded a great character who had the heart of the troops/constables alike and I have respect for that.
Not trying to give anything away, but having worked with Boscombe Down and the Military in getting trails for aircraft completed is a mine field on both sides. But never expected listening to this, shows the similar failings and problems years later. If only the full honest report come out in the late 1990s then it may have saved the colleagues from XV179 and many other incidents.
Great reading/ Listen and respect to all those involved in the book and my condolences.

The truth shall always find its way to be known.
Simply the story of a honourable man, and his dedicated family, who was torn from his calling, and those who for dishonourable purposes tried to bury their failings for so many years. If anything the final chapter is testament to the FACT, that truth and politics never rarely be found to make good bedfellows!

heartbreakingly informative
unvarnished insight into the "troubles" but also into tie corruption rife at the top of the MOD

So boring I almost fell asleep
If it's a book on the troubles in Northern Ireland you're looking for this definitely isn't it. This is basically a story about Ian Phoenix's life and touches very little on the actual details of the troubles. Compared to the likes of "Charlie One", "Sniper fire in Belfast", or "The Operators" this book will have you sleeping in no time. Instead of keeping me engrossed in the action I found myself constantly having to rewind after been so bored my mind had moved onto something else. Whilst I appreciate the extremes Ian went to to try to keep the country safe, I'm thankful I'd an option to refund it. Didn't even finish it I got so bored :-(
