Summary

Griff:

Walking away from my marriage was my idea of a fresh start.

My kid is in college, my ex-wife and I are on good terms…but being single in my 40s is a world different to being single in my teens.

I’m thankful for my best friend, Heath. He’s got my back like he always does and is ready to take me out and show me how the bachelor life is done.

He was never supposed to show me literally.

After we wake up in bed together, I can’t stop looking at him differently, and one thing becomes abundantly clear.

I talk a big talk about wanting to be single, but my platonic rule book has gone out the window.

Heath:

When my best friend comes to me for help post-divorce, I’m only too happy to impart my wisdom to him.

After all, Griffin isn’t my type, but even I can tell he’s a complete lumbersnack. Good with his hands, kind eyes, and a killer smile. All the guys and gals are gonna eat him alive.

But the more time we spend together, the less “not my type” he becomes. I’m the one who can’t get enough of him.

Neither of us is interested in a relationship, so what’s a little fun between friends?

We both know the score.

Perfection

I absolutely loved this book. Saw the author share one sentence of it on Tiktok this morning, bought it and couldn’t stop listening. Loved the characters and the story which was brought to life by perfect narration. Thank you.

Heart warming

Who doesn’t love a friends to lovers romance? I love a romance between older characters with more life story to tell, so these two didn’t disappoint.

Narration as always by Russo was amazing, they capture both characters and all supporting characters really well and make the whole story an enjoyable listen.

So dull - a big disappointment

Nick J. Russo is a great narrator but even he couldn't save this one. The characters are bland and have little chemistry and the plot is so low stakes, it's pretty much NO stakes; the "obstacles" in the way of the HEA are so obviously flimsy and easily surmountable that they were almost non-existent.

The idea of not telling your 17 year old kid that you're divorcing and essentially putting your lives on hold and LYING to him for a year is ridiculous, and please, PLEASE can we get rid of the annoying/interfering friends in romances once and for all? It's NOT nice or cute for people to basically be pushing someone into doing something he so clearly doesn't want to do. All Griff's friends are pushing him to get out there and get laid and have lots of hook-ups when he's obviously not keen on the idea, and they badger him anyway.

I think NJR must have had an off day here; he's normally excellent, but Griff and Heath sound too similar and it's difficult to tell them apart by ear. There's no real difference in their narrative voices anyway, but the lack of clear differentiation made it difficult to identify them. The secondary cast is well done - Poppy and Felix especially - but it's not Mr. Russo's best.

Might suit lovers of low-to-no angst stories better than it did me - I won't be listening to any more books in the series, and probably not anything else by this author.
