Summary
We are all people-pleasers in one way or another - even those who deny it.
Whether at work, home or in our relationships, we all know how it feels to want people to like us. The problem comes when we give up our own needs along the way.
In this life-changing book, psychotherapist Emma Reed Turrell explains the different ‘types’ of people-pleaser and provides practical, reassuring advice on how to better understand - and stop - people-pleasing behaviour when it starts to affect your own needs.
Please Yourself will help you care for others in the right way - and ultimately, help you take better care of yourself.
Critic reviews
"Utterly brilliant. Emma Reed-Turrell is a wonderful writer, a compassionate guide and the therapist we all long for. Every page of Please Yourself contains a truth bomb; every sentence a golden nugget of wisdom. If you're a people-pleaser (and you probably are) this book will change your life. My only regret is that it didn't exist earlier as it would have saved me - and everyone else a whole lot of bother." (Elizabeth Day, author of How to Fail)
"Realistic, non-judgemental and genuinely helpful: your one way ticket to growing a backbone. It took me decades to learn why I people pleased and how to stop. Thanks to Emma Reed Turrell, you don’t need to wait that long." (Sam Baker, author of The Shift)
"As a recovering people-pleaser who often falls back into its tempting trap, I absolutely loved this book. Informative, entertaining and empowering." (Emma Gannon, author of Olive)

It’s a great straight talking insightful book/audio
As a coach I teach this stuff everyday. It’s what is essentially at the heart of most standard mental health issues and create the common symptoms most people suffer who aren’t in the best mindset themselves. I often find that I’d like a resource I can give clients to take away, to prompt them and remind them that they are not their thoughts. This is going to be very useful.

Unapologetically honest
There is so much confusion in this world about how we are “meant” to behave. Who knows any more what is right and what is wrong when it comes to interacting with our fellow humans. At the end of the day what more can we do other than attempt to please ourselves and see how that works? This book offers a balanced approach to this process whereby we can take into consideration other people’s perspectives without it overshadowing our own.

Absolutely brilliant, practical and insightful
Really loved this book, and I am not a ‘self help’ type at all. The title intrigued me, and I was hooked after the first chapter. So many people will recognise themselves here, and gain real insight into the origins of their people pleasing behaviour. There is lots of advice and practical help, often through examples of real peoples’ situations. . Found myself going back to listen to certain chapters over and over Really liked the author’s style of narration. Highly recommended

Highly recommend, so helpful
I was worried this would be gimmicky and groundless, but decided to give it a go. How wrong - this has been (and will be - I will listen again when needed) so helpful and complements therapy and other work I’m doing to deal with the effects of some difficult relationships/childhood experiences. Well written, easy to listen to, great use of case studies - five stars.
